Why do some people look so weirdly older/younger?

Take a look at thispicture.. They are related. Guess their ages.
(details in spoiler next post).

They are twins, both 26 when this picture was taken

Both had the same profession. Why does one look 45 and the other 19?

Why yes I am getting bored by the #lockdown.

I guessed they were both in their 20s. If the guy on the left side of the photo looks older to you, it might be because the image shows more lines and shadows on his face.

I’m curious to hear the answer to this as well. Here’s my guess.

I took some of the principles I’ve learned in the art of makeup and applied them here. In makeup, there are many techniques you can use to give yourself a more youthful look: you want to make certain features that thin out look fuller; for example, making lips look softer and more pillowy, and making eyebrows look less sparse are a couple ways to look more youthful. You can also do certain things with your complexion: make your complexion look more even and bright, add a touch of color to your cheeks, use shading techniques to draw the eye upwards and make the skin look less saggy.

To apply these principles to the gentlemen in the picture: The guy on the right appears to have fuller lips and less sparse eyebrows. His skin looks warmer, brighter, and less lined – imho, it looks like he’s better hydrated than his brother, and is getting a better night’s sleep. And it looks like he has more color in his cheeks.

the one on the right is gay? (not commenting on his sexuality but the fact that gay men take better care of their skin, and are often more focused with greater success on their appearance).

the one on the left has a wife? ex- wife? multiple children? is the caregiver for a sick relative? has a higher stress job (same profession doesn’t mean same job within that profession)? party’s more?

For the one on the left, it could be sun damage, smoking and drinking, all of which would accelerate facial aging. Notice especially the puffy eyes. Also his face might look a little more relaxed if he weren’t forcing that smile. But still, you can see the skin damage.

If the one on the right has popped his collar to keep the sun off his neck, that may be an indication that he is purposely taking better care of his skin (sun screen, moisturizer, etc.). That could be because he wants to be more sexually attractive, and/or it could be because he’s seen what’s happened to his brother.

I know you think this is a compliment but it isn’t. It’s a stereotype, especially the parts that you cite as “facts.”

Malnutrition, drugs, alcohol, smoking, stress and sun damage all make you look older. So does being too thin (it makes your bones and wrinkles in your face more noticeable).

Its interesting how much faster people aged on the outside just a couple generations ago. I saw some old family photos, people in their 30s look like people in their 50s do now. People in their 50s look like people in their 70s do now.

Sun and acute uppers/downers (most commonly tobacco and alcohol) age people. Also, the guy on the left is smiling in a way that produces more wrinkles and also exposes his yokel-looking teeth. For some reason, his eyebrows look sparser.

I don’t think I presented anything as a fact. if you’re talking about the fact that I didn’t put the take better care of their skin after the often part, that was a grammatical faux pas.

I am using a stereotype there, but it’s one I’ve seen often in real life, so it’s not without merit.

and if I’ve offended any gay person by thinking they’re often more careful about taking care of their appearance, I would tell them that’s the oddest thing I’ve ever apologized for, but I’m sorry.

Lighting and facial expression look like a lot of the difference. The adult male twins I know have that kind of difference in appearance. I can only recall one pair of adult female twins and while they looked very much alike I suspect in their case that was mainly due to makeup and hairstyle.

This is a stereotype. You obviously haven’t seen some of the gay men I’ve known.

what percentage of them would you guess would be offended by someone saying that gay men often take better care of their appearance?

that’s fairly benign, right? or am I just that insensitive?

ALL stereotypes are offensive, even “positive” ones. Are Asians good at math? Are Jews smart and rich? Are Blacks more athletic?

You can’t trust photographs for that kind of stuff. I’m not even talking about doctoring it. Controlling lighting, among other aspects, has a huge effect on perception.

They look like a father and son, Dad on the left, son on the right; I’d say mid-40s and late teens/early 20s respectively.

Yes, I immediately thought it was a father and son.

You can see aging in celebrities. Dick Clark looked youthful well into his fifties.

Jack Klugnan looked a decade older than his real age. He was born in 1922. 46 when Odd Couple went on the air in 1968.

Dick Clark (1929) was still hosting Bandstand in 1968 and looked like a guy in his late 20’s.

How did this became about straight/gay? What on earth?

I have looked at other photos of these two (they are well-known cricket players Mark and Steve Waugh) and this photo is an anomaly.

They are fraternal twins, not identical.

But not a generation apart. Siblings born at the same time. Both exposed to the antipodes sun.
