Why do stored linens stink?

I’ve just gotten the sheets for the guest room out of the closet and they are s-t-i-n-k-y!

They were laundered and folded when I put them in there a month or so ago. And now they smell stale and yucky. (that’s a technical term)

What makes fabric smell so bad?

Perhaps they weren’t fully dry when you put them away. That can really stink them up.

Alternately, they weren’t completely clean. It could be that your washer left behind some residue. Try an extra rinse cycle with a cup of vinegar or lemon juice next time.

It could be that the closet itself has mildew in it. Try washing down the walls with a disinfectant, and then putting some cedar chips in there with the sheets. You may want to leave the door slightly ajar to encourage air circulation.

Properly cleaned fabric should not be able to evolve off odors without some sort of external influence (i.e., mold, mildew, residue, insects or vermin)

Thanks!

There wasn’t any physical evidence of mold or bugs. I’ll guess it’s some kind of residue thing.

We launder with Tide and use Bounce in the dryer so they smell yummy when I put them away. But when I got them out, they smelled stale and “stinky.”

I’ll try a second rinse cycle w/ vinegar next time and see if that helps.

My vote is going to “damp when folded” - put them through an extra round in the dryer next time.
