Man, it really pisses me off that I have to sleep.
why is it that, for a third of my day, I have to lie dormant, being aware of nothing at all, participating in nothing at all, accomplishing nothing at all??
Besides the fact that it’s an obvious survivalist disadvantage, I really don’t understand why we physiologically need to sleep. We get energy from food, so if we run out, shouldn’t we just be able to eat more?
And what happens if we don’t sleep? What if I just decided I’m not going to sleep anymore, will I die or something?
The exact science of sleep is largley unknown, but scientists know a lot goes on when you sleep.
The japanesse(spelling) found that one of the best tourtures was killing someone through lack of sleep (yes, it’s possible).
I know it sounds like a wise ass answer, but I think the main reason we sleep is to make us less sleepy. Of course, there are exceptions like the lady mentioned in Cecil’s column referenced above, but generally, the longer you are awake, the more powerful the urge or compulsion to sleep will get.
Think of sleep as nature’s way of defragging your hard drive.
