I don’t do it because I always read the sign on the gas pump that says that topping off is illegal, so I don’t.
Were you talking about the royal “we” when you asked the question? Many more people here don’t round off here than do.

I was taught to do that, back in the late '60’s to early '70’s…I was told it was to “top off the tank.” I still have no idea what that means. After all, if the sensor tells you the tank is full, how does adding a few more drops of gas “top it off”? The heck with that.
Love, Phil
If I have enough money to fill up I will. If I don’t I’ll often round, either to make it easier to mentally keep track of my bank account, or so that my account will still have multiples of $20 so I don’t get screwed when I try to use the ATM.
ETA: Plus, pumping gas is boring. Trying to round it off adds a small amount of entertainment.
vindication!
You all should read 1066 and All That based on the observation that English history students only remember that date, pretty much.
As for me, I rounded it when you paid cash, but I haven’t done it for years.
Illegal? This just keeps getting more interesting. In what way is it illegal?
And, no I originally wasn’t using the royal we.
My wise ass generally tries to pump 2.718 or 3.142 gallons. I’d pump more, but I tend to buy small amounts of gas in hopes the prices will keep going down.

Rounding off isn’t illegal. But topping off is in some places. When the gas pump turns off you aren’t supposed to put any more gas in, for fear of it overflowing and creating a flammable hazard.
They’re making a game of it. Wouldn’t you be tempetd to?
Order in the world? Hell, don’t you know that if you fill the tank to an odd number of cents the universe itself will cease to exist!
Nope. Not even a little.
I’ve never done it. I don’t pay cash for gas- I always use a credit card. I don’t keep a running total of my credit card expenditures- the card company is nice enough to send me one of those every month with the bill, so there’s no math that needs to be made easier.
I don’t tend to have a problem with getting bored while at the gas pump. This may have something to do with the fact that the only cars I’ve ever owned were small (a Pontiac Sunfire and my current Honda Civic), and so don’t take a lot of time to fill up.
