Why do you like your job?

I work at a toy store… people come up to me all the time, while I’m ringing their purchases, and tell me how fun my job must be  And, it completely is.

– I love working with kids, even the shy or off the wall ones.

– I’m a big kid who loves toys.

– I’m newly in love with Harry Potter

I am a district manager with Tim Horton Donuts. The franchisee that I work for owns 30 stores, 10 of which I am responsible directly for.

I love the flexibility in my job. My boss is great, she allows me to do whatever I want however I want to do it and rarely is there a time limit on getting it done. My staff are great at what they do (most of the time) and it is rare that I have to step into a situaution for them…normally I just advise them what needs to be done.
I get to develope and impliment incentive plans. I get to plan and hold various moral and team building activities.

The best part is if I am having a crappy day and people are ticking me off… I can walk away, go for a drive and cool off  Then come back in a little while and solve the problem when I am ready to.

For all the bitching and complaining I do…there is a whole lot of rewarding things that keep me there.

OH! and the pay is good and gotta love an all expense paid company car!

You all seem to have some pretty cool jobs, but I wouldn’t trade mine for just about anything. In fact, if I won the lotto last night, I’d still show up for work on Monday… only for free.

I’m a self employed fence/deck builder-potter-furniture maker-renovator-barn builder thingy. Jack of most trades, master of one or two. I specialize in decks and fences. Been doing it for 15yrs.

In the summer, I charge an arm and a leg for my work and work on referal only. My favorite is building BIG decks with fancy angles and good sturdy mortice and tenon joinery.

In the winter, I do whatever. Right now I’m doing chainlink installation for a local non-profit animal shelter. I’m charging them like a third my normal rate. Partly because it’s a period of low demand, and partly because this shelter so desperately needs help. Picture the boiler room from A Nightmare on Elm Street… that would give you an impression of the state of this shelter. Big rats scurrying everywhere… the stench of 300 dogs in rancid conditions. It’s a nightmare. Scarey and depressing place to be, but someone has to do it.

Anyway… blah blah blah… this hijack has been aborted.

I build stuff and play with my cool tool/toys all day. I love it. Tim Allen eat your heart out.

I am a psychologist who works with people who have recently suffered spinal cord or serious orthopedic injuries. I know that to most people, the idea of talking with someone who just became paralyzed from the neck down does not sound appealing, but I really like my job. I like the fact that sometimes (not always, unfortunately) I can make a difference. I can be the person who will listen to their pain and not try to cheer them up, if that is what they need. On the other hand, I can be the person who allows them to hope that a miracle will happen and they will walk again. Basically, I spend my day listening and being in touch with my emotions and the emotions of my patients. It is a pretty good way to spend my time.

It is not my dream job–working with those with terminal illnesses is what I really want to do–but I like it.

Great thread, dropzone. And Veb, I am jealous. I am going to be a librarian in my next life.

I’m a second grade teacher. 'Nuf said

I like my job mainly because I have a great group of peers and a great boss that I work with every day. I also respect the people at the top making the decisions, which is quite unusual for me. Yes, there are assholes and political gameplaying that go on, but my boss, the people in the group, and almost everyone I work with on a day-to-day basis tell is like it is and don’t have hidden agendas.

My boss and many of the people in the group are also friends that I can have fun with, not just coworkers.

I get to dabble in some interesting technology, the project is highly visible, and the career path is pretty good. However, compared to liking the people I work with, this is much less important.

However, I don’t do this kind of work for fun. It was a conscious decision to get a degree in something that I could do well and that I could make good money doing. I admit it - I’m a materialistic bitch. There are many things that I don’t like about the job. But overall, I like going to work, and I make enough money that I can indulge myself on rather extavagent vacations, and I have enough disposable income that I can afford to go out to dinner whenever I want, get massages on a regular basis, and other nice indulgences.
