I can do pie. Even do the homemade crust. Had a heck of a time when I moved here because there’s no Crisco. So I had to learn how to make a pie crust again. Now with butter. Mmm butter.

So, Tuba Diva, why again do you post to SDMB?
Been reading SD from the 80s from free papers in Baltimore then the books, then online. It’s THE place to be clever, smart, and get mucho info, maybe even be cutesy or jerky. Plus games are fun.
English is a second language for me. I don’t want to lose it, so I watch BBC and CNN daily, and read English news online. They say I should also chat but I am not a very chatty person.
That is indeed how I came up with the username. The Doors, Tell all the people.
English is my first language, but living in an area where almost everyone speaks it as a 2nd/3rd/4th language, means I can’t use idioms or references that I could use in the U.S., such as, “I know nothing” from Hogan’s Heroes. (Which doesn’t actually work in writing, because the intonation is so important.)
I know people who are losing their first language because they use it so little. Fortunately my work is in English. Mostly.
Why? I’m not sure anymore. I’ll let you know if I figure it out.
abstinence and ignorance are not the same … but can influence each other (totally unawares) … reinforcing the idiom/euphemism “one step forward, two steps back”.
To fight ignorance of course!
As it turned out it is almost always my ignorance which took me a while to realize, but that makes it even better. 
Plus, the people. thousands of great people and a few total dipsticks (I believe that is what the Straightdope advertisement says).
Because the police told me I wasn’t allowed to spray-paint my opinions on nearby buildings any more, of course!!
But really, because it’s a fun and knowledgeable group of people.
Let’s imagine it’s not a myth and you come across tens of thousands of lemmings leaping off a cliff to their certain bloody, painful deaths.
But you have an opportunity to divert those lemmings onto a path of perpetual happiness and enlightenment.
Would you take that opportunity?
