I’m much too violent a sleeper to be happy on a water bed. I hate them. HATE them. Although my mom had a very cool custom made jumbo waterbed that was 9 feet by 7 feet. That was kinda cool.
As for the dogs… You will never find a person who loves their dogs more than I do, you really won’t. They totally fill in for kids in my world. But at some point along the way, after ten years of sleeping with my cocker spaniels, I woke up one day and said… no more dog hair and miscellenaneous dog dirt in my bed ever again. Period.
And that was a little less than 20 years ago. These days I cannot begin to imagine how I tolerated it for so long. Now my dogs sleep either right next to me on the floor, or, more often, in their crate a few feet away. And once in a blue moon I will invite them up for five minutes for cuddles. Very rare, because I don’t want them getting the idea its ok.
Careful! Sand sticking to body parts is uncomfortable as hell.
I like the size of the bedroom that I have now. At 15’X20’, it’s almost half of my apartment. It’s big enough for my queen size bed, night stand entertainment center and two dressers in one end and a small arts/crafts studio-computer area in the other. My living room is less than half that size. Works for me, since when I entertain, my visitors are usually sitting around the kitchen (which is only seperated from the living room by floor covering) or relaxing on the deck.
I just realized…my current bedroom is bigger than my entire first apartment. (I mean the first one I had by myself and not with roommates.) The closet is probably close to the size my dorm room was, and I did have a roommate.
So obviously I don’t NEED a huge master bedroom. But I LIKE it.
We were never looking for a big master bedroom, but the place we eventually bought came with a big “master suite” on the 3rd floor. I have come to like it - it’s long and narrow, about 14 feet wide and runs the length of the house. We have the bed at one end, a TV area at the other end, and a big bath with double sinks, storage, etc. I didn’t like it at first, it seemed too big and made me feel like I was sleeping in the living room, but it wasn’t as hard to get used to as the huge bathroom. Talk about feeling exposed!
If we move I don’t know what we’ll look for in our next house, exactly, but I doubt that big master bedroom will be high on the list. It’s OK, it’s just not a priority for us. We kind of like small rooms, which is why we bought a 1910s house. Very compartmentalized, no “open floor plan” that everyone else seems to prize. I guess we just prefer something older-fashioned.
My “master bedroom” is 14 x 15; I have a queen size bed and there are built-in shelves all along one wall. There is a master bath adjoining it with two sinks, which is a bit wasteful since there’s only one of me. The built-in shelves and the cabinet beneath them are useful for storage, and there’s still room for a dresser and a few bookcases. Oddly enough, the closets (there are two, side by side with a mirror between them) are the standard hanging rod with shelves above them, but the guest bedroom (which is currently being used for storage) has a walk-in closet.
I don’t think I’d need a larger bedroom unless there was some reason to have my desk in there, but since I also have a large office that’s not likely. When I was house hunting I did see one “master bedroom suite” that had a jacuzzi and a shower stall in the bathroom, and I was sorely tempted except for the fact that it was on the second floor, and my knees are no longer fond of stairs.
My space. Sometimes a house/flat is not just your own. A bedroom is. It’s yours to enjoy alone or in company. And your own space is an important thing. Having said that if I have a flat that is my own, I don’t care so much about big bedrooms as I do a good study, lounge, and (importantly) kitchen.
Capitalism. I’m a consumer. I like things. Though I generally can’t afford many. A master bedroom makes me feel like a consumer and a bit Louis XIVthy.
Sims. I’ve probably given a bit of a hint for my age there but I’d always indulge in a very large master bedroom with houses I designed on it. A good roaring fireplace, and a small librarywith deep mahogany study desk and rich silken armchairs don’t go astray either.
