My disdain for Cathy is not the (tired, unfunny) subject matter. I’m a guy, so maybe I just don’t get it. I reserve the right to be amazed that someone with as little drawing talent as Cathy Guisewite is able to have a job that involves drawing.
That would be Zits, wouldn’t it? Hell, Jeremy even has Calvin’s teenage HAIR.
Oh, and my feminine side is puking its guts out at the idea that Cathy is a spokesperson for “women’s issues.”
IMO, Frazz is what you’d get if Calvin grew up and used his imagination for the Forces of Good™.
Breathed is a good satiric writer and an un-innovative, good-enough drawer, who wants to be a good visual artist and a surreal, whimsically funny writer. He’s just not.
His best stuff is topical, biting, and doesn’t try to be Little Nemo in Slumberland. His worst stuff is the opposite - it tries to be Little Nemo and throws in references and sarcasm because he doesn’t know what else to do.
Berke Breathed think he all that, but he not.
