Why does my g/f have to wait for an ATM card

My g/f’s bank is making her wait for a simple ATM card. Not a debit, credit or cheque guarantee card (if you can use the latter anywhere these days) but a simple ATM card. Something that will free up their cashiers instead of handing her a hundred odd quid in bills.

She left her last bank when they screwed up some direct debits on her and there was some too and fro over charges, would this discourage them? Its a UK bank if that helps.

Um, any idea if they are making her wait or does it just take time to get the card? I know with my bank, and every bank I’ve ever had, the ATM or Debit card is mailed from either a corporate office or some third party that they outsource it to. They don’t have the tools to make a card at the branch offices.

Additionally it could be that there’s some security involved in which they want to deliver it via mail in order to ensure that you are who you say you are.

It’s not just that the card is getting printed? My HSBC card has my name embossed on it, and it arrived in the post about a week after I opened my account.

Yeah, it took me a couple week to get my ATM card when I got a knew account.

Although, way back in the day when I got my very first ATM card, I think they were able to give me a temporary card. It was basically flimsy cardstock (like a business card) with a magnetic stripe and they programmed it right there while I waited. It was automatically deactivated the first time I used my real ATM card when it finally came in the mail.

That was almost 20 years ago though. I don’t think I’ve seen one of those temporary cards since.

Its not a wait in the post, its a wait till they decided whether or not to let her have one. My g/f’s had the account for well over a year now.

In that case I’m guessing that there were more issues than just a couple of direct debit mix-ups. Does she have a bad credit rating?

She may have something with an phone company, they charged her for a time when she couldn’t use her phone. It was before I met her, so I’m not clear on the details. Certainly they’ve not followed up on it with debt collectors or courts, so I’m not sure how big a bill it was.

You’re talking about a simple banking card, not a credit card, right?

When I lost mine and had to get it replaced, I went to the branch and the gave men ahand-written temporary one that was programmed on the spot, and the permanent one with my name embossed arrived in the mail a week or so later.

My credit union issues temporary ATM cards for use while you’re waiting for your card to arrive in the mail.

My bank issues an ATM card, permanent one, on the spot, and programs it.

Last year, when my accounts we reconfigured and I needed a new one, and 10 years ago when they first got them - same deal.

I’m astounded it’s not that way everywhere, it’s not like I live in a hub of advanced technology or anything.

In the UK (or Northern Ireland at least) they’re used for a limited time and then a new one is sent out in the post to replace them.
