I’m trying to load some CDs into iTunes. Sometimes the entire CD will load into the library. Lately, though, the drive has been opening seemingly at random. Some times, three songs will load before it expectorates the disc; other times, not even one.
When this happens, the drive makes a not-normal rhythmic whirring sound.
I just updated iTunes, but it was happening before the update as well.
If it always happens in the same place on the same CD’s, it’s possible that there is a scratch, stain, or something else that is interfering with the reading.
I don’t know anything about iTunes, but normally ripping software will tell you what sort of error was encountered - at least any Windows program I’ve used.
If that turns out to be the case, there are products that will repair minor scratches by using a fine abrasive to remove some of the polycarbonate surface on the side of the CD that is read.
It’s counter-intuitive, but it’s scratches on the label side that are a problem. The metal layer encoding the music is right below that. If the encoding layer is damaged, the CD is toast. You can still recover the parts that aren’t damaged but you you’ll never be able to play the CD normally no matter what you do.
CD/DVD drives are a nightmare to troubleshoot (is it the drive? is it the software? is it the disc? why doesn’t it happen ever time?) but sooooo cheap and easy to replace. I replace mine every 3-4 years.
