It doesn’t happen when I connect to other wireless internet connections except for when I’m home. AFAIK I am the only one that it happens too.
The wireless connection will glitch and knock me offline for different periods of time without warning. it may last as little as a second or as long at five minutes and there is no warning that it will happen.
Microwaves and cordless phones can work on the same frequency. Does it glitch when you’re making yourself a tasty popcorn snack? Or chatting on the phone? Are you in an apartment where you might be adjacent to anyone using one of those devices?
Windows XP – Service pack 1 or 2? (right click on my computer, and choose properties, it should tell you.) Windows XP Service pack 1 had a lot of bugs in it for managing wireless networks.
The Netgear router – did you change any setting on it at all when you set it up?
Most likely you do have windows setting up your wireless network, so this may be the issue.
No settings were changed on it. I have roomates who use the network as well and they have no errors or glitches. hmmm.
It is possible that others are using cordless phones or microwaves but they are in different apts and I think it would be awkward if I ran over there and asked them if they were using their microwave when my internet glitches.
Okay – First, you need to change some settings on your router. By leaving it on the standard settings you leave yourself open to all sorts of bad stuff. Best case someone surfs on your network. Worst, they can track everything that is broadcasted over the network.
You need to pick a unique SSID for your wireless network. The SSID is the name of the wireless network. All routers from the factory use the same SSID. Then you need to turn off the broadcast SSID feature, so people cannot see your network.
You also need to turn on some sort of security for your wireless network. This is a password that is needed to access the network. In the settings for the router you can do this.
In windows, check that there are no other wireless networks in range. If there are any set the system to not connect to them. (rightclick on your wireless network connection, choose show available wireless networks. If you see more than one go to the advanced setting and disable them)
