Absolutely the best ship names in ANY SF are the warships from Iain Banks’ Culture series. My personal favorite: I Blame The Parents. Nobody else is even close.
Y’know, this is fun. Somebody should start a thread.
I’m the same way: sci-fi fan who can’t watch Andromeda. But for me the reason is clear. The overly done goofy irony and constant sexual “subtext” has just gotten tired. They are trying to be a little grittier now, but they’ve already lost me I’m afraid…
I remember reading this on Ain-it-cool. Wolfe didn't just leave, he was fired. The episode that did it was called "Bunker Hill" It:
-
Featured a character other than Captain Jerkules (Harper)
-
Concerned the ongoing storyline (Wasn’t a one-off)
-
The good guys lost.
It was decent episode, and far too much for Sorbo’s ego to handle.
The history of this show is one of insulting the viewer’s intellegence. The changes to the appearance of characters have been mentioned. This was done to make the females sexier (Gold Trance, Ghod awfull blue wigged Romey), or because the produces (Sorbo) felt that viewers tuning in for the first time wouldn’t be able to understand why one character had spikes on his arms, or a tail.
Yes we viewer of Science Fantasy are FAR to dim to grasp an ongoing plot, or understand that the guy with the spikes on his arms, or the girl with the tail are aliens. :dubious:
I keep hoping it will get better.
But this new season is just too…I can’t even describe it.
And the last episode was just bizarre. The whole thing seemed like a really low budget play - there’s no money for sets so they just keep fading spotlights in and out on the characters in a misguided attempt to make things interesting.
Ick. And I don’t like new-pink-not-Rommie.
I quit watching with an episode called, I believe, “Blazing Rockets” or “Hot Jets”.
Not true: Optimus Prime doesn’t have a flaw
But anyway, I liked Season 1 of Andromeda - the explanation why the bridge crew has to do everything was sound (ship from the past, no remaining crewmembers). I liked Season 2, because Empire building is always fun. However, Season 3 was pretty bad, having Dillon Hunt as lackey of a new commonwealth was just not my cup of tea. The only redeeming point was the final episode where they got rid of that backstabbing Nietzschean.
I haven’t seen Season 4 or 5 yet, but fully intend to do so!
I’m bumping this because I watched an episode last night (well, actually this afternoon via tape delay) and it was a season 5 episode. (#99 - Though a Glass Darkly)
For some reason I thought the show was picked up by SciFi and no longer in syndication.
I went to epguides to catch up, looks like some interesting episodes.
I’ll be on the lookout for the show now, but probably not go through extreme measures to see it.
