Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda

I’m in a whimsical mood and feel like starting a thread. Why I’m in a whimsical mood, with the way this week’s going, is a mystery to me.

So, Andromeda. Any fans on the board? What’s the consensus of opinion?

A friend of mine tried to persuade me to watch it back when it first came on - I’d caught bits of episodes, and wasn’t terribly impressed, and the things he described as high points were pretty uninteresting to me.

Then, just recently, another associate of mine started buying the DVD sets, cheap. He was thinking about starting an Andromeda RPG campaign, and offered to let me borrow the discs to check it out.

Well, I had plenty of stuff to watch of my own, but I can almost never turn down the opportunity to absorb pop culture at my own pace.

So I’m most of the way through the first season now - it’s kinda cheesy, but actually not bad. I really, really like Trance. She’s purple. And hot. And Harper is really cool. Did I mention Trance is hot? Purple, pointed ears, devil-tail - she’s like Nightcrawler’s chromatically-challenged cousin.

It’s actually not that bad. Being on syndication has probaly saved its ass, tho. It’s on late Sunday here.

The effects are somewhat cheezy, kind of like B5, but the stories are usually good. Since I see it so hit and miss, I can’t tell if there’s an arc or not, but it seems like there is.

The first season’s probably the best. They had an executive producer from Deep Space 9 who was committed to a complex, seasons-long story arc that was headed in interesting directions.

He was of course fired in the second season and stories and characters both went right downhill thereafter.

But Lexa Doig is a hottie.

And, regarding Trance?

She loses both the purple skin and the tail later on, because some executive with the production company didn’t like them.
