Andromeda: when did they get a crew?

Is anyone still watching Andromeda? I still mostly enjoy the show, even through some unfortunate changes (mostly having to do with Trance not being purple anymore)…still, somehow I missed some things…

The episode I saw last weekend may be one of the worst ever - an unstoppable armored dude trying (for some reason) to destroy the Andromeda Ascendant and Trance exploring possible futures to defeat it. No motives for the armored guy, and a really stupid resolution made this episode smell bad from across the room.

Still, some confusion came into the picture:

Rommie: “The intruder is in the slipstream core. It’s killing people.”
Dylan: “Tir, meet up with the security team.”
Security team? People in the slipstream core who aren’t Harper? When did they get a crew? More to the point, why are the crew never seen except when specifically mentioned? The main characters still roam empty hallways. What happened to the utility droids that were roaming the ship performing maintenance and could usually be seen in the background? Why does the security team dress like BMX Ninjas instead of High Guard Lancers? How many crewmen do they have, and when did they get 'em? When do Bekah, Trance, Dylan and Tir sleep? They’re always on bridge duty…

For that matter, what happened to Tir’s Netischean bone-claw-forearm thingies? Is he trying to look more human? I thought those were attached rather permanently…

*Trance: *“Does it know Bekah’s the one?”
What? Does Bekah have some “chosen one” destiny that only Trance knows about - has this been mentioned before? Or was this a stupid throwaway line?

Trance’s bonsai tree has shown up in two episodes I’ve recently seen, and it even had gold sparkles about it in one of them. Has the tree been explained as some mystical artifact, or is it just Trance’s odd little tree that she prunes (ruthlessly) when she meditates?

So, can anyone answer my general “WTF?”

This show has a lot of loose ends. Presumably, with the formation of the commonwealth, the Andromeda got a crew, but you’d never think it from the way the show is shot. Also, why does the director slip in a rapid Fight Club-type flash shot of his cat into some episodes without explanation?

I’d forgotten about the cat…in one episode Dylan was even playing with a kitten that he couldn’t explain, then it was never mentioned again.

Unfortunately Hugh, you and I seem to be the only dopers watching the show…

Actually, I used to watch the show but gave up a few episodes into the third season when it became apparent that they were getting rid of everything remaining that was any good about the show.

I saw an interview somewhere where Kevin Sorbo said that they were dropping continuity and arc episodes because they didn’t want viewers to have to remember what had happened in another episode to enjoy the show. (That’s why Tyr no longer has his bone-blades btw, they didn’t want new viewers who didn’t know what a Netischean was to be confused by them.)

I read that the actor just didn’t want to wear the damn things.
I quit when Rev left, no Tir is going, too.
A shame how Sorbo screwed it up. “Hercules In Space”.

:frowning:

I’m actually like you Tanstaafl, I quit watching in the 3rd season. The show started to lose any sense of story arc and speed off in to a chaotic frenzy. It’s at least nice to know that it was deliberate, although their explaination strikes me as nothing more than an excuse for lazy/sloppy writing.

They had a good thing going for a while, interesting characters, a building plot. But since they evidently aren’t going to tie the loose end of plots that originally got me hooked, I just can’t bring myself to watching the show anymore. What’s the point?

Like, whatever happened to the evil race and superbeing (can’t remember what they were called), that was posed to invade the galaxy? Whatever happened to the good, resisting his evil nature Zen master on board the Andromeda? Why did Trance seem to secretly be superpower but unable/unwilling to use her powers?

I guess we’ll never know. Of course, the writers probably never knew either.

That actually makes it more confusing, since every other Neitschean has the bone blades but Tyr doesn’t.

Is Keith Hamilton Cobb leaving the series or is that a rumor, Carnivorousplant?

That reminds me of another annoyance - the “new” non-purple FutureTrance. Dammit, Trance should be perky and purple.

I can’t find a cite at the moment. He has a contract so that they can call him back for maybe four more episdoes. He is returning to a soap opera, which BTW is Sorbo’s ambition, lest he have to work.
Mrs PLant saw part of an episode where Tyr was growsing to Hercules about needing “to build my self confidence”.

Robert Hewitt Wolfe from Star Trek was fired and the contnuity went down hill after that.

I agree that the show has really gone downhill. The episode featuring Tyr’s departure had large parts that were badly written and made no sense.

The writers knew. Remember Trance dying in the pilot? She’s shot, Rommie can’t help her and she dies. Then, Trance is suddenly alive and unharmed. The sensors don’t explain how it happened and neither does Trance.

What the hell happened to the writing?

anyhow here are the answers to your questionsThe Magog and The Spirit Of The Abyss were defeated when Bekah fired a nova bomb into the sun at the center of the worldship. But, the SOTA was able to contain most of the explosion. The Magog need to restart the sun and repair the ship. That’s expected to take 3 years. After that, they’ll head for occupied space and begin cleansing the universe. Dylan knows that unless he can form a new Commonwealth by then, nobody will be able to stop the Magog.

Rev Bem left without warning. He left behind a message. Being around the other Magog and especially SOTA had deeply disturbed him. He needed to be alone to sort things out.

We see him again when
The Andromeda have a mission to a doomed planet. I can't recall if the planet is due to explode, its star is going to go nova, or if it's another natural disaster. Once there, they find that Rev Bem is on the surface. Rev has been following a presence that appears as a star and speaks to him. It has promised to take him to the next level of enlightenment. At points it's not clear if the glowing thing is testing Rev or just torturing him for kicks. The crew keeps trying to ketch up with Rev and get back to the ship. Everybody ends up on a tiny ledge atop a mountain. The glowing thing sucks Rev in and spits him out again. He now seems to be half human. He's lost his fur and his features are more human, but it's not clear if Rev is now human or a human/magog hybrid. Rev hugs everybody and again leaves
Trance-Forget puprle, I miss the tail! Besides, the metallic outfit shows more cleavage:D The following is a mix of things that have been shown or said, things that have been implied, and things that may be figments of a faulty memory.
Trance can see possioble futures. She didn’t reveal this for quite a while. IIRC Dylan finally yelled ‘I know you can see the future! Now tell me what to do!’
In one of the purple eps, Trance is taken captive and interrogated. The last of her people to visit the world started a massive war that nearly wiped out the planet. Trance’s explanation ‘He was probably bored.’. When the interogator asks ‘What are you?’ Trance looks him in the eyes. We see the universe in Trance’s eyes.

On a mission to recruit a former president, the crew ends fighting off a siege from a saloon. Trance's tail is taken off by a stray shot.

Trance changed from purple to cream with metallic highlights when Harper's invention screwed up time and space. The cream Trance is from a possible future in which the Commonwealth has fallen again and things are 'very bad'. Purple and cream Trance switch places. Cream Trance must prevent the horrific future she came from(Until I typed this I never thought about what a rip off of X Men this was).

The unexplained-armored-guy episode was horrible except for showing us things from Trance's POV. She's constantly manipulating the future until it turns out the way she wants. We may not see it, but the events in each episode are the result of Trance's chronlal tampering.

Re-The Tree
The tree aparently is key to Trance’s abilities to see, chose and manipulate possible futures. She pruned it to jump back in time. Each jump required cutting of a branch. It was implied that when all the branches were gone, she’d be unable to make other time jumps.
When the Maru was stolen and taken into hostile territory, most of the crew didn’t want to retrieve it. But when Trance learned her tree was on board, she insisted that they get the Maru.

We've seen one of Trance's people. He implied that their species was vastly superior to all others and that Trance's work with the crew was like a human trying to teach chimps physics. It was also hinted that Trance's people a truly ancient race whose scientists found a way to make themselves godlike
They don't want the Magog destroying everybody else. But they don't seem to want to act directly. Apparently they've been secretly aiding the Commonwealth in order to defeat the worldship.

[/spoilers]

Re-The New Crew
It just kind of happened. The New Commonwealth now has a full standing military, a government, and plenty of bureaucracy. AFAIK we never got an explanation for this and considering what’s happened to the series, I don’t expect to get one.

It was strongly hinted that the talking star-thing Rev was following/being tested by was in some way the spirit of his “mother”, the human woman that was infected with the Magog larva that would become Rev. Ewww.

As for Trance’s tail, at least its loss was explained (and shown)and led to just a smidgen of character development and a nice “moment” between Trance and Tyr. Golden FutureTrance was just kinda thrown at us in one (mediocre) episode. They’ve (thankfully) toned down her makeup, but she still needs to be purple again.

Thank God they realized that Rommie looked dumb with the bad blue hair and stopped that foolishness after only one or two episodes.

I gave up mid-2nd-season, soon after Robert Hewitt Wolfe was thrown from the runaway train.

The last time I tried to watch it, I saw a “what if” episode that had Rade coming to the future with Andromeda instead of Dylan. Then the events of the series were regurgitated with Rade in the place of Dylan. It was about at the level of the clip episode, and was awful.

Not even the presence of Lexa Doig, for whom I would amputate various body parts, can bring me back to the show now.

So, has Tarn Vedra been rediscovered and brought into this new Commonwealth?

No one?

Far as I know Tarn Vedra is still “lost”, though a Vedran did show up in one episode and informed Dylan that they are watching his actions with approval.

The Vedrans apparently are centaurs who can run super-fast. The character design and execution were not convincing. I hope we never see one again.

What happened to the armoured guy?
Who were the guys dressed like Ninjas?

Sigh…second attempt. Thank you, hamsters.

The armored guy just kinda went away after Dylan and the crew…well, really they just kinda did all the stuff they’d done before in every other timeline Trance examined. It didn’t make much sense.

The Ninja guys were the Andromeda Ascendant’s security team - one of the elements of this episode that made me go and create this thread.

My one objection:

Lose the yellow whore and bring back the purple cutie.

But I see that many of you agree.

Trance was cute purple, I’ll agree. Cute like a pixie. But as future-Trance, she’s a full-fledged hottie!

Second to Rommie, of course. Ronnie is the acme.
