Is there some new HD compression issue or something that they’re using? This has been driving me nuts in every preseason game so far – things look decent pre-snap, but as soon as the ball is snapped it’s like things go into slo-mo for a moment. It’s just barely perceptible – my wife and father-in-law only notice it every now and then, and my mother-in-law never sees it – but it’s a glaring problem to me on almost every snap.
It’s not my TV or broadcast package – I’ve now watched three different games at three different places with three different providers, so this certainly seems like a FOX issue to me.
Anyone know the deal?
I don’t notice what you see. I see that Jpeg “ghosting” around the players when they’re showing the snap, and never noticed that before (which doesn’t absolutely mean it wasn’t there).
Our Fox affiliate began transmitting a subchannel since the last season ended, so they have a lower bandwidth for the HD channel. I don’t know if other Fox affiliates have begun transmiiting (or at least reserving bandwidth for) a subchannel, but if so, that could be a cause. If you’re receiving through digital cable, who knows what they do.
My TV is an LCD, with 1368* X 768 pixels, received over the air. (* or something).
Yes! I thought it was just my cable box messing up, but I really noticed it seemed choppy post-snap in the Dallas-Tennessee game. It was almost like the frame rate dropped during the high-action shots, and it was quite noticeable on my HDTV with digital cable.
It was quite noticeable and annoying and seemed to distract from the fluidity of the game to me. It would only be acceptable if I were watching the game on the internet.
Well, whatever the problem is, it’s definitely FOX’s problem.
Last night I watched some of the Dolphins/Bucs game, and the problem was at its worst – absolutely atrocious. I watched part of the same game this afternoon when it was being rebroadcast on NFL Network HD, and there wasn’t a bit of compression stutter.
Get this right before the season, FOX. You don’t want a nation of football fans pissed off at you…
There is a discussion over at the AVS Forum (the best place I know of for TV issues.) Apparently it’s not just the NFL but Fox’s MLB coverage as well.
