Why does this make me itch?

My chiropractor uses a high speed vibrating massager thingie on me before doing adjustments, to loosen up muscles & increase blood flow. It feels great, but makes me itchy as hell wherever it’s applied. Similarly, the jets in my hot tub make me itchy wherever they hit, though it does feel wonderful.

Why? is it blood coming to the surface & tingling? is it muscle contractions? This has been bugging me for some time.

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, sounds suspiciously similar to my favorite mosquito bite remedy.

See, mosquito bites itch because they cause the skin in the area to release histamines. No histamines, no itch. If you heat up the skin it will speed up the release of histamine, and you’ll itch more. I suspect anything that causes increased blood flow would do the same.

You can use this to relieve mosquito bite itch because your skin can only produce so much histamine before it runs out. If you hold a hot wet towel (as hot as you can stand for as long as you can stand) on the mosquito bite, your skin will release all its histamine at once. You get a powerful itching, burning sensation for a second, and then no more itching for several hours.

In your case, it seems the massage and hot tub may be causing increased histamine release. The question I would ask a doctor, if I were you, is why you are releasing histamine in the first place. Perhaps you have some mild allergy? Maybe to a soap or perfume you are using?

I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I can’t even enjoy a massager on my body cause any place it massages I itch intensely! I just got a house with a jetted bathtub and the itching is so intense where the jets hit my skin! As soon as I get out it stops and if I just wait it out I can enjoy the jets after about 20 minutes of intense itching!! This even happens to my thighs and belly when I’m out walking for exercise in the heat or even the cold! so weird!

Hot tub jets do the same thing to me.
