Why does wood crackle when it burns?

Thx,
Keith

What I’m wondering is why wood never got three munchkin spokesmen to promote for use in breakfast cereals. Mom, can you pass me some of those Wood Krispies?

Fine, it’s probably water.

I believe it’s mostly from water trapped in it that flashes to steam.

I believe Anthracite is correct. There’s moisture trapped in the wood. It boils and pops when it makes a hole to escape from. If you watch the wood burn, you’ll notice boiling water coming from then ends of the logs sometimes.
