Why doesn't this sport exist? ( (team) handball + (association) football )

Well, if we are going to do THAT, let’s play CALVINBALL!!!

Irishman here. Yeah this is pretty much Gaelic football. You can run with the ball but you must solo (kick the ball to yourself) after a certain number of steps (seven I think, but this is largely up to how good the referee’s eyesight is). You can also bounce it but you cant do two bounces in a row, you must alternate with solos.

Also there are some other restrictions, like you can’t throw the ball to another player, you must punch it out of one hand with the other. Also you can’t just pick up the ball either, you must kind of flick it up with your foot. Weird but thats the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) for you.

This point is actually an oft argued point about Gaelic Football. There really is no way of legally getting the ball of someone unless you intercept a pass or knock the ball away when they are doing a solo or a bounce. This means that games just frequently descend into a series of free kicks as players foul trying to stop their opponent.

There was one strip where Rosalyn played Calvinball. One of the better strips*, IMHO.

*And no, I’m not dissing the average C&H Strip, No argument here that C&H is one of the better comic properties.

Ok, if we can’t play handball and soccer at the same time, can we at least have soccer where all the players, except for goalies wear straightjackets? I kinda think that could work.

I was going to post about speedball, since we played it in gym class in junior high. It was pretty much a game invented for gym class.

As was basketball, originally.

That last bit is not correct. In Aussie Rules you can pass forward. It’s the two rugby codes where that is forbidden. An Aussie Rules pass differs from a rugby (or American Football) pass in that you have to hold the ball in one hand and punch it out with the other.

Yes this is correct and is known as a handball, but it is also permitted to pass the ball by kicking it.
