The great thing about being a royal pundit is that the royals’ frank views are so little expressed (even by way of rebuttal) that you can make shit up like a motherfuck and never get called on it. And before you know it, the shit you made up has become canon.
Given that you’ve refused to support the claim that started this thread - a claim that, incidentally, is completely in defiance of everything that is actually known with any degree of reliability about Queen Elizabeth II, her attitude towards the role of the sovereign, her actions, her affection for her family, and the manner in which she raised and continues to treat her son - you will forgive me if I am skeptical of your other claims, cites, and sources. “I, like, totally heard this guy tell this other guy on another messageboard” isn’t a super way to start a GD.
Charles is actually a descendent of Nicholas I, on his father’s side. Nicholas was his great-great-great grandfather. His great-grandmother was a Russian grand duchess before she married the King of Greece.
Which means the Greek royals also have an even better claim to the Russian throne.
Of course it is. Any question of wider significance, regardless of its basis, is a pretty good basis for a GD thread. Now ignorance has been fought – anyone reading this thread can discern that, despite what you might read stated as an everybody-knows thing elsewhere on the 'Net, and despite one might read in tabloid-headlines (I saw one just last week at the supermarket checkout, proclaiming baldly that Elizabeth had decided (as if she could!) to bypass Charles and settle the crown on William), it is probably not true. And besides that, we’ve all had a lot of intellectual and quasi-intellectual fun with the topic, which if not the whole point of the Dope is certainly a point of it. And this thread certainly has a better grounding in reality than, say, this sort of thing, which is undeniably proper GD material.
BG, I’m just interested to know which message board you got the info from self identified brits was. Feel free to PM me if you don’t want it commonly known.
You seem curious about other cultures and I just want to be sure that you’re looking at reasonably represenative sources of how Brits truel think. The British people on the SDMB, by the way, are about as represenative as the Americans on it, if not worse.
TBH the most “representative forum” of how the TYPICAL Brit thinks is probably the comments on the Daily Mail or the Sun except when it’s to do with something that will attract nuts, those with an agenda of one kind or another, or trolls. Which to be fair rules out anything remotely to do with politics or anything very interesting. Actually the Sun is a much better newspaper than its reputation, I’d go as far as to say when one gets it it’s probably about fifth in the country. The best is the Financial Times, followed by the Times in second, followed by Telegraph Guardian in equal third. Independent is sixth.
Literotica.com General Board. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Ah I replied to you by private message, but since I see that you also posted it here I see no reason I can’t repeat what I said to you in private, which is that while it won’t be a typical selection of British posters there, there’s no reason that I can think of why the posters there gave you such an incorrect impression (kinda depends upon the size of the message board mind cause obviously a small sample can lead to weird things) - mind linking to the thread itself?
And since we’re now in the message board proper, I will mention for no particular reason that I have HEARD of literotica before. The reason being that I found it in my uncle’s history, I would estimate ten years ago. Didn’t actually LOOK at it (why would I look at self explanatory non-picture stuff like that as a horny teenager?) but, er, it’s brought back memories lol
Frankly, the General Board is the only section I ever visit. It’s like The SDMB for Dummies and Pervs. No mod-rules at all, hardly; only adspammers get banned (but they keep coming back). The hard-RW presence is quite frankly incredible, rants and screams and astonishing idiocy. And I lurves to just wallow in it! (There’s more than one kind of porn!) Can’t seem to find the thread I was thinking of, though.
That’s correct. Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, married Matilda of Scotland, whose mother was Queen Margaret, sister of Edgar Æthling. Their daughter Matilda was the mother of Henry II, founder of the Plantagenet line and ancestor of all subsequent English monarchs.

Go Charles!
Whenever I hear these stories about Charles deciding to step aside and let his son become King, I just roll my eyes and remember that 40 years ago people would speculate about Elizabeth abdicating and letting Charles become King. It didn’t happen then, it ain’t going to happen now.
As far as Elizabeth wanting to outlive Charles, why shouldn’t she want to live as long as she could? She has a great life, few people on earth have what she has-luxury, her husband and kids are alive, her mother lived to a ripe old age in good health. There was one of those British drama pieces several years ago on PBS involving the Cambridge spy ring where Elizabeth says she will probably be one of the few people that when they go to heaven that will find it doesn’t match what she had on earth. Probably an invented conversation but it carries a lot of truth.
I would say SDMB Britons are probably slightly closer to Britons generally than SDMB Americans are to Americans. Not all of Britain is *Sun *readers, and while I’ve never seen anyone demand the England manager’s head on this board I don’t doubt there are lots of Dopers thinking it.
