Why don't gas stations have video cameras on the parking lots!?

Ok, this is a bit of a rant, but also a genuine question.

I work at a gas station. In this gas station, there are 4 cameras which can see everything I do at any given time. The are other cameras, all monitoring some part of the store.

However, there are NO cameras that face the parking lot. Drive offs are a big problem with us, and we lose a decent chunk of money that way. More money than employees steal, I’m sure - if there’s any stolen at all - and so putting 4 cameras on us and none on cars seems silly.

At first, I thought this was a peculiarity with my particular store, but I talked to several friends that worked at gas stations, and this seems to be a universal phoenomina.

The only immeadiate reason I can think of is: Vandalism. Outside cameras are exposed.

Well, the way my store is set up, cameras inside the building could easily cover the whole lot - 2 of them could cover the lot perfectly. If they can’t afford 2 more, they could easily take 2 of the cameras focused on the registers and stuff and not lose any real coverage.

Since this is the case in many stations, WTF is up with that? Drive offs have to be one of the biggest losses for stations, and not only do they seem to ignore the situation completely, but they bitch out their employees when 1/150120501 cars happens to slip away when you’re busy.

I can testify that it’s not a universal phenomenon; the Arco that I get my gas at has multiple cameras outside pointed at the pumps / parking lot, in addition to the ones inside the mini-mart.

Nearly every station here in the UK has cameras that cover the entire forecourt; some of them have automatic registration number recognition (or so they say).

The price of a tank of gas is usually a midemeanor. Its not worth the time and effort to take some one to court over.

Hold-ups on the other hand (which occur in the store) are worth the time and effort.

Just ny WAG of course.
