Why don't most people get high their first time on weed?

I will admit to having tried pot twice in my ‘youth’… although i hae never even touched a lit cigarette, nor will I ever. They’re gross. But i tried some weed out of a bong, considering it less gross.

I inhaled very well, and got ‘buzzed’ meaning I felt light headed and got very hungry for about 4 hours. Other than that, both times, I felt no good effects. I tried the second time in order to see if it realy did something after the first time.

I do have a lot of fat cells though, and maybe that was the problem. Well, I won’t be trying it again, any time soon.

This is very nearly a philosophical question. When I first got stoned, (let’s see, 32 years ago) I was confused as to what to expect. I knew what drunk felt like, but stoned was different. I asked a friend, “When you say you get a buzz, do you mean a noise in your ears?”
“No,” he said, “it’s more like a noise in your mind. It’s a changed way of looking at things. It takes a little getting used to.”

I can also tell you, from this extended perspective, that many dopers, having first experienced some of life’s great joys while stoned, get the mistaken idea that they need dope to enjoy those things. Some folks carry that misconception for decades.

"Measure twice, cut once. Dang! Measure again, cut again.

Pot is a mental high, very susceptible to suggestion. Expecting as dramatic a change in experience as getting sussed on liquor or to be ‘whacked out on goofballs’? Not gonna happen. Just as one can pull one’s head together when the cops come through the front door, the high is subject to an exertion of force by the will. In the newbies case, I (subjectively) believe they are expecting and looking for one type of experience, not receiving that, and in their disappointment overlooking the actual delight of smoking pot.

I have a well-worn copy of A Child’s Garden of Grass that I have loaned out many times. I think it should be required reading in school, along with the ‘Just Say No’ curriculum. Thanks for listening!

Once in a while you can get shown the light
in the strangest of places
if you look at it right…

I smoked for an extended period of time in my youth (16), so I don’t remember if it had any effect the first time (I also don’t remember a lot of other things, but I’m told I had a good time…). However, I did quit completely (I mean everything, 100%) when I started driving, about 22. About 10 years later, just for kicks and old times’ sake, I tried smoking again. WHOA! Whereas years ago, I could go through a half ounce a day, this time a couple of small drags and I felt like I had dropped acid! Very unpleasant. I have been extremely susceptible ever since - I can’t smoke anything BUT pot, and even that has to be grown organically, i.e. no hydroponic. Well, at least it’s MUCH cheaper, now… By the way, same kinda problem with alcohol - I used to be able to drink a lot (hard liquor), now a glass of wine will start getting me there… Cheap date!
