Why don't most people get high their first time on weed?

Why don’t most people get high their first time on weed?

because the newbie probably got sold catnip or parsley.

No, other people got loaded while I didn’t.
This was a wall ago- I’ve gotten high since.
Most of my freinds say the same thing.

Reverse tolerance. Once you’ve been toking for long enough, you can get high just by smelling the pot someone else is smoking as they walk by.

I can attest to this. My roommate’s the biggest pothead ever (think four or five times a day), and I’ve seen him smoke this one guy up, and it didn’t do anything for the guy. His first time. I hear other people talking about it too. Both me and my roommate have wondered this.

My guess is that the first time, people are expecting so much more than what actually happens, so they are let down the whole time and don’t feel anything.

I doubt it. Being high is no subtle effect. (I can’t speak from personal experience with weed, but I’ve seen many a person high on it.)

This phenomonon doesn’t happen with other substances, such as, say, alcohol or heroine, so I’m really curious as to why it would with this.

What I’ve heard:

THC is hoarded by the fat cells. This is why drug tests for marijuana use can turn up positive for a very long time. To get high, you need to saturate your body fat, which probably won’t happen during initial use.

I woulnd’t want to give anyone the idea that I’m an expert, but I can think of 2 explanations.

  1. They’re high and act it, but they don’t realize it, and later report that they didn’t get high. This happened to my sister who insists she was never high (her friends report otherwise).

  2. A reluctance to inhale. Applies mostly to people who hope to become President.

Work is the curse of the drinking classes. (Oscar Wilde)

The first time I ever tried marijuana, I wanted to know what it felt like. As a result, I got high.

However, I suspect that many people who first toke up are a bit worried about the effects, and haven’t yet mastered the “skill” of inhaling and holding it in. Given those two factors, they probably don’t get too much THC into their system.

I seriously doubt that a first-time user is somehow “immune” to the effects of THC. Rather, I think that various factors contribute to their taking in only a small amount of the drug.

For the record, let me tell everybody here that 20 years ago I got pretty buzzed on THC for six months, and I had a dreadful crash afterwards that forever turned me off of the drug. I do not consider marijuana to be any more benign than alcohol, and in some ways it’s worse, because you don’t get a hangover.

I am, in many ways, opposed to the legalization of marijuana. I know that it seriously screwed me up for while. Of course, I know all the counter-arguments (e.g. that it helps the Mafia to exist), but I don’t think that in the long run that this is a good substance to put into your body.

Mind you, I smoke cigarettes, so my credibility is probably shot.

Hey, drunkgerman420. What’s the significance of the number at the end of your handle there?

4/20 is Hitler’s birthday. Normally, I wouldn’t make such a connection, except you have the word “german” right in front of it.

You a Hitler fan? I’d just like to get this cleared up, so I can figure out if I need to start ignoring you right away. If there’s some other reason, sorry, and please explain.

I got high off my first and only time from pot. Then again, I inhaled half the joint in one time. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have read that THC works on areas of the brain which need to ‘taught’ to be high. Meaning that the high is a learned response in many ways. It explains why the high is similar, but not always the same, for different people. The reasoning follows that if you get high with people who get the munchies, then your brain associates munchies with getting high, and when the physical aspects of increased blood-flow to the stomach, etc occur, then you get a major case of the “gimme some Dorito’s now!” This would also explain why different people have such diverse reactions to it: hungry, spacey, paranoid, horny, happy, sad, touchy-feely, etc. This is why it is such a complex drug- it is not JUST a physical reaction.

And yes, your argument against the legalization of pot falls to the wayside when compared with your use of cigarettes. Marijuana is considered a class 3 drug which in basic terms means “Any substance with no medicinal benefit and a high tendency for abuse and addiction.” If that is why pot is illegal, then please explain to us why alcohol and tobacco are not. Tobacco kills. Alcohol kills and destroy families. Prescribed drugs for relaxation (Valium, Prozac, etc.) have bad/unknown side-effects and are expensive. Pot makes you want to watch tv, relax and eat chips. If pot were legalized a healthier approach to its use would occur, crime would go down, tax would be raised, trees would be saved, etc. etc.

I am a good friend. I am a good husband. I am a good worker. I am always on-time and I rarely leave early. I am creative and hard-working. I have plans for the future that I work to accomplish. I do all of this positive stuff and more, and you know what? I smoke pot occasionally. It is not an evil thing, nor should it be treated that way. If you had a bad experience with it, then YOU had a bad experience with it. Fine, don’t do it again. But sending messages that pot is bad and shouldn’t be legal, while alcohol and tobacco are, well, you know, not great, but if you control yourself, then, well, you should be fine…That just perpetuates ignorance and feeds the fire to keep something medically beneficial to many, and mentally beneficial to even more, illegal.
And if I’m on a rant, I would like to state it now: Anyone who would deny a cancer or AIDS patient a safe, effective treatment is a satanic fuck. Go to hell where you belong.
(no- that wasn’t directed specifically to the person who posted their disagreeing with the legalization even though they smoke cigarettes, they just got me started on a rant, sorry for the attack!)

Ohmighod…marihuana addicts and Hitler…the 420 connection!!!

I’m with Tomcat, at least the first portion of his statement. My brother is 2 1/2 years older than I, and was a dedicated smoker for YEARS. He urged me, when you start, start with me, you will get good stuff.
Of course, I ignored him, and got high the first time with Sarah, my first true love. I knew how to suck it in, hold it, and release- I’d watched Bro do it for years… I did NOT get high in any way. Girlfriend sure did, though. The second time out, was deeeeelightful. But, I am here to attest that it had nothing to do with fears, inability to toke properly, or anything else. It just…didn’t take. Dunno why.

If you want to kiss the sky, you’d better learn how to kneel.

Easy. Cuz they don’t smoke it properly. duh…

Kinda like asking why people don’t come the first time they have sex, cuz they don’t know how to do it.

Nah. You smoke pot the same way you smoke a cigarette, and most people start smoking cigarettes before they start smoking pot. I inhaled and everything my first time and barely felt a thing.

I have to cast my vote for the “learned experience” theory. Newbies just don’t realize what it feels like. I remember acting completely silly and still claiming “I’m not high!” then giggling incessantly.

I smoked pot maybe 6 or 7 times without getting high, and thought it was the coolest thing, this “in” secret that this forbidden drug, this substance everyone made a big deal about, did nothing at all when you actually smoked it.

One day I accept a ride to school (someone with wheels comes by the bus stop) and the three of us share a joint, and after awhile I ask, "WhaTTTTtttt
T I M E time time time time time IS ? is ? is ? is ? is ? it ¿ &and&etc+andalso& how LLLLLLLLLllllllllllonggggggggggggggg have? we been ?¿ uh… >???,???< …{been doing what?} …uh, r i d i n g -??? {to school, riding to school, yes}
“ha ha ha, you’re STONED stoned STONED!”

Mind you, this was massively, qualitatively different. After significant amount of experience, I could cope with environments and demanding social occasions whilst muchly stoned, but this was major incapacitation. And previous smokings of identical substance just hadn’t had any measurable effect at all. Mild relaxation like after drinking red zinger tea, perhaps.
