On that note, Inter and Milan are pretty good on a historic basis, even if lately they’ve been unable to top Juventus. At least, they were two of the teams that my 90s European soccer computer game had winning a lot of the time such that their names stuck, and they definitely have a long history of being in the top division.
I’ve been wondering; it seems to me that European fans, in general, are less perturbed by the lack of parity than American fans would be. Not that fans of non-Juventus, non-Barca, non-Real Madrid teams wouldn’t be pissed about never reaching the pinnacle, but they don’t seem to mind it as much as Americans would if such were the case in American leagues.
I’ll put it down to similar to American college sports. You want to win the bulk of your conference games and the rivalry game. But you weren’t expecting to be competitive as far as a national championship.
That may have to do with the ancillary competitions those nations host, in addition to the league itself. England has the FA Cup, Spain has the Copa Del Rey, Italy has the Coppa Italia, etc. Those competitions are not as heavily dominated by the big clubs, which gives fans of the smaller clubs something to root for.
