Why every commercial I see on Drunk Driving single out men?

Which, (if true), is racist. IMHO.

I’m soooo not looking forward to any rape/false accusations of rape conversations. Being a white male, I had a difficult enough time saying that the home security commercials (might) be racist, (once again, if what **gonzomax **said was true). I really don’t want to weigh-in on anything ‘rape’.

then again, all the victims being white (could be) racist as well.

I’d love a cite of me saying anywhere that women are superior. Put up or shut up and admit you’re making shit up to discredit someone who doesn’t agree with your extremely slanted, black and white views of gender relations. This is also known as lying, by the way. I’ll wait (forever, probably) for a retraction or apology for your mischaracterization of me.

I highly, highly doubt this.

That’s feminism? Taking a woman’s side in any dispute (except, I assume, when she ‘cries’ rape)? News to me.

Out of curiosity, when has a major feminist organization taken a man’s side against a woman? Or more broadly, taken a position that would help men and not women?

Does the men’s movement get involved in women’s issues, or side with women against men? If not, why do you think that is? Or for that matter, do organizations focusing on African Americans’ issues ever side with white people? What about organizations for the disabled, do they ever side with the able bodied? Hmmm, I wonder…

It’s not really so much as choosing sides but about advocating for a particular group. It’s not like women’s groups are out to screw over all men.

Anyone know what the state of play in maternity leave availability vs. paternity leave availability was prior to the Family Medical Leave Act? I’m not certain, but I strongly suspect that the act (which was heavily lobbied for by NOW, etc) increased the leave customarily available to men by a much larger amount than that available to women.

Maybe he lives in the 1930’s.

I remember one feminist, (not sure of the name, and can’t find a site), that advocated boys being brought up in a world that embraced their unique needs. All I really remember was that she was on a Time or Newsweek cover in the 90’s. I think the title said something to the effect of, “Let’s not forget about the boys” or something along those lines. I know she wrote a book, but it’s been so long, I can’t remember much about her other than thinking that she was at least trying to see things from different angles. I think the book was ‘War Against Boys’

Feminism’s such a broad title. I can imagine many conflicting viewpoints among people who consider themselves feminists.

Ah, I think it was a book by that name, by Christina Hoff Sommers.

And yet we’re forever being told that feminism is all about equality between men and women, and not about advancing women’s interests at the expense of men’s. Hmmm, I wonder…

Why does advancing women’s interest always have to be at the expense of men? That’s an assumption on your part that I think is probably not terribly justified. Do you get up in arms about organizations for African Americans or the disabled? Or do you just have a bone to pick with women’s organizations? Hmmm, I wonder…

Rubystreak, I’m not asking you this with any hostility as I respect the veiws you’ve presented in this thread.

I’m just wondering if you feel a men’s movement would have any relevance?

If not, is the title; “feminist” a little dated, (in your opinion)?

Definitely. I wish the men’s movement would get organized and tackle the injustices of the child support system and laws governing it. Abortion laws are unfair to men also. My husband can’t get paid parental leave, and that’s not fair. So yes, I think there’s a place for a men’s movement. Men, despite holding most of the positions of power in government and industry, still suffer injustice. I also think that our culture can be really hard on men and would like to see that change, which is something the men’s movement can address. Change comes from within, though. I think men need to work on changing other men’s attitudes, since I still think men are primarily oppressed by other men and institutions mostly run by men.

This;

and the draft. NOW supports an egalitarian registration for the draft, not that they favor a draft in general but that whatever the state of affairs re: the draft, that it should be gender-neutral.

Thanks.
I think Abortion laws are unfair to men, but just something that (we) have to live with/except, which is unfortunate, but not really ‘unjust’. Though you may be against abortion altogether, in which case I would say… it’s a topic I struggle with as well, (though I’m pro-choice).

But you’re pretty kickass in my book! You seem like you can empathize regarding struggles others have, and that’s a good quality.

I have to hear more on your thoughts on this. How are abortion laws unfair to men?

Can you PM me, if you don’t wanna hijack further? wonders if I can even still get pms, now that I notice ‘guest’ under my name, instead of 'member’

PM sent. I definitely don’t want to hijack this thread onto that topic. It tends to be a real doozy.

MyFootsZZZ, thanks for the kind words. I try to be fair and see points of view other than my own, and I’m glad that’s coming across to someone.
