In this story, we see something straight out of a movie-- a corrupt criminal trying to order a hit on the Judge trying his case.
The question I have to ask is, why would the defendant do such a thing? Does a criminal actually have anything to gain if his judge should die? What was he trying to accomplish? Or is this guy just nuts?
Oblviously, I can’t get inside this guy’s head and tell you what he’s thinking, but the general ideas are, in no particular order:
-
Delay, delay, delay. The longer the defendant can delay the trial the more likely he is to get off. Evidence can disappear, witnesses can die (or be killed), etc.
-
Intimidation of the next judge to hear the case. If judge “B” is called to replace judge “A”, who was killed during the trial, he may be intimidated enough to sway his rulings toward the defendant. Countries with large drug cartels, like Colombia, see judges killed often for this reason.
-
He just didn’t like the judge.
-
He’s crazy as a bed bug.
-
All of the above.
