Well, Denver must have been prescient, because they had originally been awarded the ‘76 winter games but, on the strength of a public referendum, turned down the approved bid.
Of course there was an unusual honesty to that situation in that they had to admit it’d raise taxes.
After the Montreal debacle there was an odd sequence of events in which its lessons were kind of partially forgotten due to the boycotts and the fact LA took the IOC to the cleaners in 1984. It took awhile for resistance to these fiascos to build back up.
It’ll be interesting to see how 2024, 2028 and 2032 go.
I’ve often thought this. Athens could eventually build up history, kind of like the Masters. Jim Nantz saying “This is the famous corner where in 2034, blah-de blah passed some other dude in the marathon.” And maybe it would bring in some money for Greece during the off years.
If a permanent location was chosen, I’d expect it would push for hosting other international sports competitions during the months and years the Olympics aren’t being held there. So the city could be quite busy year-round, sort of how a football stadium is used for other events the rest of the year.
