Why is it easier to destroy than create?

I don’t want this turning into a Great Debate. What I want to know is why can we destroy something in a matter of minutes what took years to build?

Second Law of Thermodynamics. There is only one “correct” configuration for a large object like a building or a car. But there are many different states that we just lump together under the heading of “rubble.” While creating a specific pile of rubble would probably take just as long as creating the desired object, we don’t try to create any specific configuration of rubble. Thus when we destroy something by imploding a building or putting a car into one of those junkyard crusher devices, we have a pretty easy time of it, because there are zillions of different outcomes which all look the same to us.

That is the only technical fact that I know and what do you do but beat me to it.

Short answer: The second law of thermodynamics

Long answer: Things generally do not build themselves, because systems tend to disorder. It takes energy to overcome this tendency, but little is needed to give into it.

Another way to think of it is that most things can be in a state of destruction a lot more ways than they can be in a state on non-destruction. Imagine smashing your monitor with a big hammer. Whether the glass breaks into a few big pieces, or a bunch of little ones, it does not matter because either way your monitor is not going to work. There is only one state that your monitor can be in for it to work. All the pieces have to be in exactly the right place. In order to insure that the monitor is in this working state a great deal of care must be taken with every piece. However, when you want to smash it precision is less important because you don’t care which specific “destroyed” state it ends up in.

dang, took too long to write.

The short answer is entropy

No, that’s the really short answer. Got to keep these things straight, ya’ know?

Delta-S

Curses - what’s the code for a delta?

Deep.

I wonder if we can overload the Matrix’ randomizing program if well all go into our kitchen and break all of our dishes at the same time. It’s worth a try. Everyone stack all your plates and glasses on the countertop and plan to smash them all to pieces at exactly 6:00 AM PST. Download the atomic clock program so we can synchronize it perfectly.

THERE’S STILL HOPE!!!

Hey! Just what did I ever do to you?
