Why is price negotiation for drugs considered a bad thing

What is the motive for condeming this? Doesn’t the gov. already negotiate anything else it buys like military hardware or labor? Why would negotiating drug prices be any different.

Without knowing the specifics of whom, I’d guess one of the following:

1.) Some things, especially in the medical field, just shouldn’t go to the lowest bidder (unless there are excellent quality controls external to the company).

2.) Some people have invested rather heavily in pharmaceuticals or have other reasons that make them not neutral in their representation and view of drug companies.

Free market vs. socialism.

Must admit, when I read the thread title, my first response was, “Because the man on the street corner is likely to half pull you outta the car and slap you into next week.” Apparently that’s not the type of which you were speaking. Never mind.

I’m not sure what you mean by price negotiation. Can you explain?

Because if price negotiation was allowed with drug manufacturers (as in many other countries or by private health organizations) it might:

  1. Reduce the profits of said drug manufacturers.
  2. The drug manufacturers might reduce the money spent on political contributions, lobbying and perks for politicians.

And those two things would be bad for the powers that be (as opposed to being good for the users of the drugs).
