Is there a reason that all of the buildings that share the alley with mine all have had their gates open for the last 3 weeks? I know that our gate closes because I made the apparent mistake of closing it once before I left only to find it open again when I got home.
I came home from vacation to find that this is an apparent thing. It’s been long enough that I’m embarrassed to ask. Do people in chicago keep their electric gates open all the time in the winter so that they don’t freeze shut? Should I notify my insurance?
It may not apply to this case, but private parking lots in many jurisdictions must have some means to be closed off. A gate, posts and chains, cables, etc. If they don’t, and in some cases if they aren’t actually locked off some minimum time (one day a year is sometimes enough) their legal status of public vs private can be in question.
May be an obsolete law in many places.
