Cecil has an excellent discussion on the issue. Prior to his column, I had just assumed they are brailled for the same reason guys have nipples.
For convenience, a corrected link:
Why is there braille on drive-up teller machines?
So are you proposing that guys have nipples due to federal mandate? Welcome to the board.
Boy, I’m glad we have that preview feature now, or it would have taken me 4 posts to recall that I need quotes on the url tag.
Tis true. My nipples were federally mandated. Not only that, but they are Y2K compliant, meet ISO standards, are free of MSG, and are quasi-kosher. Plus they turn pretty colours when twisted.
But back to the subject at hand. I just figgered that the keypads were mass produced --why bother having a second, smaller run of smooth keypads? It’s more cost efficent to keep the same basic design. Just like my nipples. All fourteen of them (per the latest federal mandate).
