Why is there so much anti Dane Cook sentiment?

What, besides his aforementioned joke-stealing, douchebagish attitude (which comes off as totally unlikeable compared to other comedians) and act which mainly consists of getting on stage, yelling, jumping, and making up new ways to give the finger (look up the “sufi”)? His audience is 99% frat guys who think he’s funny (the same way date rape is hilarious) and sorority girls who want his prick.

Oh, here’s a good example of his fans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKC4glL7P2k

I don’t know much about Dane Cook, and I have never seen his stand-up act (I did see “Dan In Real Life” which Cook had a small role in) but I have seen him 3 or 4 times on various talk shows (Leno, Conan, etc.) and every single time he took pains to mention the fact that he has never once in his entire life had an alcoholic beverage or tried an illicit drug.

Nothing wrong with that, and it could be seen as a commendable thing to be able to say, but I was pretty surprised that he felt that he had to mention it three separate times on three different shows…

Is there a backstory to this?

Were his parents junkies or something? (not that that would be the only possible explanation for being a teetotaler)

My guess is “it’s the Christian thing to do.”

Oh yeah, and he hated on atheists in one of his acts. Another reason to loathe the guy.

To be fair, there’s no hating on atheists on that bit, just hating on one dickhead who happens to be an atheist. I’m not a big Dane Cook fan, but that is one of his bits that I really like.

Frankly, I’m a little tired of all the rabid hate for any comedian under the banner of “he steals material”.

All of them do. Get the fuck over it.

I dunno about anybody else (skimmed straight down to the bottom of the thread), but for me a big part of it is his delivery. Dude, back the hell off from the mike. You’re talking to it, not giving it a blowjob. I shouldn’t hear pfwowff between every syllable because you don’t know how to use your equipment.

Other than that, I just don’t find most of his stuff that funny. shrug I don’t quite feel the same way about his as many Dopers do about, say, Everybody Loves Raymond, but I do find him grating.

He was pretty funny In Waiting though.

“WELCOME TO THUNDERDOME, BITCH!”

Perhaps you shouldn’t paint all of us with the same fucking brush. Get the fuck over yourself.

Hey Dane, how’s it going?

I didn’t mind him on Hawaii 5-0 as Danno’s brother. He was fine in that role. His standup doesn’t offend me in any particular way. So count me in as one who doesn’t get the hate.

I was only addressing the people who specifically said that they hated him because he stole material. We get some of that in every “I hate (comedian) X” thread.

Lighten up Francis.

No, they don’t. That is such a load of BS I’m finding it hard to keep a straight face here.

Both of you need to cool it. This is getting out of line for Cafe Society.

I haven’t watched that yet, but I heard about it and will one of these days.

I’ve laughed out loud at some of his routines, but when it comes to stand up, I mostly just catch the best stuff. A short routine here, a short clip there. I don’t buy full-length two-hour long comedy shows. When I have watched some longer clips of Dane, he comes across as a little too angry, and he rambles on. Oh well. I can’t think of any comedians I could sit and listen to for an hour without getting bored or finding some of their tangents tedious and lame.

Most of Dane’s material I’m familiar with is old stuff now. I don’t even know what his current comedy style is. He talks about how he’s grown over the years. He’s trying to branch out as an all-around entertainer, and he seems to have the energy and wits about him to do it. Most comedians have a hard time transitioning to acting, or music, or whatnot.

Few comedians can keep up with him, and that pisses them off. I wish I had half his energy and motivation.

I don’t have a problem with him, and I guess I don’t obsess over him either. He’s easy on the eyes, not drop dead gorgeous or anything. He’s reasonably talented. He can make me laugh. I haven’t heard much about him being a dick in real life. He’s got a ton of energy, and it apparently isn’t fueled by booze and drugs, and I give him huge credit for that, in the entertainment business.

I’ll continue to follow him on Facebook, and wish him well in his career, wherever it takes him.

I don’t understand the apparent intensity of the hate, like he doesn’t deserve his current level of success. That’s bullshit. He deserves every bit of success he gets, and I wish him well.

Watched all the clips linked to here and a few more besides. I hadn’t previously seen Dane Cook do stand-up, but I did see “Dan in Real Life” and I seem to recall a romantic comedy with him as the lead and Alec Baldwin as his dad, but I can’t remember what it was called. Oh, I also listened to the Marc Maron interview (I enjoy WTF even if I’m not much of a stand-up aficionado).

Based on what I’ve seen, I don’t like his stand-up. What he talks about and the way it’s delivered does not tickle my funny bone. I don’t have strong feelings about him or his comedy at this point, but I imagine if I was forced to watch him for a while I might grow to hate him. He also gives off a mildly douchy vibe, it may or may not accurately reflect his personality but it makes me wary.
