Why is Tony Stark/Iron Man broke?

I’ve been reading the collected hardcover of “New Avengers” lately, and it’s mentioned several times that Iron Man/Tony Stark is now broke - that Stark Industries can no longer afford to give the Avengers a mansion, expensive equipment, Quin-jets, etc.

The Wikipedia page doesn’t seem to have any mention of this - so what’s the deal?

And…how “broke” are we talking about? Like “on the verge of having his company seized” or “can only afford a Gulfstream III and not a Gulfstream V”?

Yeah, I was a bit confused, as in the next panel he shows them the top three floors of his latest Stark Building - an architectural masterpiece - that they can use for their headquarters.

I haven’t been readin Iron Man’s own book … well, for a long long time now.

However, I do have the mutant ability to absorb pop culture knowledge indirectly, and I seem to recall that Tony’s company hasn’t been in the best shape lately, not helped at all by his calamitous stint as Secretary of Defense - and bankrolling the Avengers is an expensive proposition even for the very rich.

My impression is that he’s not bankrupt, but he can’t afford to build a new Avengers mansion, which was a large complex with state of the art machinery and systems.

I also assume it’s “rich man broke” meaning he is still wealhty but doesn’t have that much risk capital and isn’t very fluid.

I’m surprised he was able to fund them as long as he did, the way they were always trashing their equipment. I mean, Quinjets don’t grow on trees. Those things can’t be cheap, and since it seems like they only manage to land them safely about half of the time there’s no way you’re getting them insured. Over the years they must have gone through thousands of those things alone, never mind all the other damage.

And how often did they have to have rec room of the mansion repaired, what with Hercules, Thor and the Hulk having their occasional “tussles” in there? Not to mention reimbursing people for the property damaged caused by the laser cannons that guarded the front?

It’s all those damn trips to the Savage Land.

I thought the Avengers were originally supported by an independent trust fund Tony set up in his Mom’s name?

Correct. The Maria Stark Foundation.
