Why is Trailer Park Boys labeled as a Netflix original?

I’m confused about this show - I just started watching it when I saw it on Netflix streaming, and it was labeled a Netflix original. I’d heard of it but never seen it before (I guess it’s one of those “cult” status shows). According to IMDB it started in 2001, and while Netflix existed then that was way before they started producing original stuff. And the episodes are all labeled as “Showcase originals” in the credits, whatever Showcase is.

I guess Netflix is producing new episodes or something? Anyone here a fan of it? So far it’s not always drop-dead hilarious but it has some really funny moments. I like the whole training of Corey and Trevor like they’re dogs schtick. Also I was surprised to see a really young Ellen Page in a few episodes as the Lahey’s daughter.

The first three seasons of Arrested Development were on FOX, and Netflix made the 4th season, and they label Arrested Development as a Netflix Original

It’s a Canadian show and Showcase is a Canadian TV network.

Netflix bills “Derek” as a Netflix Original too, but it’s a British show and shown on Channel 4, a British TV network. I’m guessing it buys the rights to call it “A Netflix Original [to America, you’re welcome]”

Love the show, been a fan since forever. Sometimes I can’t believe I still watch it and love it but it always makes me laugh!

I don’t recall seeing “Netflix original” on it, but we’re only on season 5. We see all the Canadian production credits. My understanding is that Netflix took it on at some point. And good for them. So far I like all of Netflix’s original programming that I’ve seen (which is Orange Is the New Black and House of Cards, basically). I guess I should at TPB to that.

If you’re watching streaming it says it right on top of the show’s title. Like this.

By the way for anyone curious about the show, it’s worth checking out despite the name. It’s a Reno 911-style show (fake documentary) set in a Canadian trailer park. Rather than being about cops it’s more about the brushes with the law that the trailer park residents have (and deserve.) If you liked Reno you’d probably like this.

And it also has occasional guest appearances by the band, Rush. Mostly guitarist Alex Lifeson putting on his “actor” hat.
