Why is your job better than mine?

I work in government… enough said…

7 days on, 7 days off. In effect, I only work 6 months out of the year.

I work fairly late at night, meaning I never have to wake up before 11 am, and I work largely alone and unsupervised, with no one to irritate me.

I work at home, when I want, for as long as I want or as little as I want. My dogs keep me company round the clock. I can have the TV or music on all day while I’m working. I can play online as much as I want. I can take a break and go shopping or take a nap any time I want. I can go out and play with the dogs any time I want. I eat what I want when I want and nobody ever steals my food out of the fridge. I make more than enough money to justify what I do.

The down side is no benefits, but since Papa Tiger has benefits out the wazoo I’m well covered in everything I need. Sick day? Sure, just stay in bed. Vacation? Whenever I want.

Life is good.

I spend almost half of every day in my studio rehearsing, practicing or recording.

I work out of my house, set my own hours, and listen to great music 24/7.

I go to almost any concert I can imagine free, and at most Madison shows, I have access to backstage and get to hang out with some pretty heavy cats. This year I’ve hung out with the following people, and generally had drinks, conversation or smoked with:

Pat McGee, Butch Vig, Robert Randolph, Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge, Shawn Mullins, Shemekia Copeland, Dave Matthews, Tim Reynolds, Chris Castino, John Fishman, Mike Gordon, Clyde Stubblefield, Joe Firstman, Zakk Wylde, Les Paul, David Grisman, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, Jorma Kaukonen.

This month I’m going to be meeting with Bela Fleck and Emmylou Harris and (hopefully) bringing one or both in as guest performers on one of my artists’ new albums.

My side gig is composing music for a professional children’s theatre companyy. Fun, happy stuff that’s just a hoot to write and record, and the kids go apesh*t for it.

It’s funny how some people count sitting on their arse all day as a positive. Would be a negative for me!

  • I work with talented kids who love what they do.
  • Free gym, aerobics, pilates, yoga, squash, trampoline…
  • Discounted martial arts, kickboxing, dance…
  • If I want a day off, I just tell admin, no questions asked. (Within reason, of course!)
  • I get exercise doing my job and don’t even realise it.
  • It’s fun and easy in one way, yet challenging in a good way.
  • My work is actually one of my great loves.
  • I get constant rewards: the kids’ smiles, their medals, their new skills.
  • My wage is great for people my age, and in light of the fact that I actually look forward to going to work.

I love it.

I get snacks every day, for free. I get to play outside every day, on a real playground. I always get to play with play-dough every day.

I don’t go in till 8:45 a.m., and I’m done everyday at 12:15.

I also get to do a fun craft, sometimes with glitter, sometimes with crayons or markers or paint, usually with glue, and sometimes I get to do a cool science experiment with baking soda and vinegar.

My job is lots of fun! :ccol:

Reading this thread seems to affect me the same way watching Office Space does. I have lost all interest in my not-nearly-as-good-as-everyone-else’s job. But I do get free soda…that’s cool I guess. :frowning:
