Why isn't Nick Cage called Nick Copolla? (and other celeb surprise family links)

It’s probably not a surprise to most people here that Nick Cage is Francis Ford Copolla’s Nephew, and his dad is a copolla too.

I am wondering why ‘cage’ then? I am sure it is something simple like - He didn’t want to be thought of as just another copolla…

And what cool/interesting facts (i.e. who’s related to who) should I be aware of?

/\

You got it. There’s no more to it than that.

Here’s one: Micheal Keaton’s real name is Micheal Douglas.

When he was on Inside the Actor’s Studio, he explained why he chose Cage - an old director or old character in a movie, I forget which. And yes, he didn’t want to ride on his famous Uncle’s coattails.

Famous relations? I guess I’ll be the first to mention that Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine are brother and sister.

And on Preview, I’ll add to Fibber McGee’s post that Michael Keaton and Diane Keaton are not related. He chose the name Keaton after seeing her picture in a magazine.

Actually Dooku, I’ve always heard the Nic Cage - who is a big comic book fan - named himself after the Marvel Comics character Luke Cage.

That’s right - I remember him saying that now that you mention it.

Actually, he was credited as Nicholas Coppola in one of his first appearances: Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Albert Brooks’s real name is Albert Einstein. I’ve always liked that one.

But in his first movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High he is billed as Nicolas Coppola.

Albert Brooks is also the brother of Bob “Super Dave” Einstein.

Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine were sisters.

Paul McCartney’s younger brother changed his name to Mike McGear and had a mildly successful career as a musician with the group “Scaffold” (probably the only rock group to have its lyrics included in “The Oxford Book of Modern English Poetry.”)

Bill Murray’s acting brother goes by the name Brian Doyle-Murray; the two have occasionally appeared together (“Scrooged,” “Caddyshack,” “Ghostbusters 2,” “Groundhog Day”), though Doyle-Murray has been fairly successful without Bill (he’s currently the Flying Dutchman on “Spongebob Squarepants” and seems to be a recurring character on “Yes, Dear”).

I remember hearing a rumor that David Caruso was James Cagney’s son, but I found nothing on GOOGLE to corroborate that.

Well, according to the IMDB (today) Marlon Brando may be the grandfather of Courtney Love. I guess her mother is coming out with a tell-all book about how she got DNA tested that proves she [the mother] is the daughter of Brando. Whether it’s true or not, who knows? But I could certainly believe it. They’re both a couple of nutcases.

In addition, Albert Brooks’ father is Harry Einstein, who played “Parkyakarkus” on “The Eddie Cantor Show” in the 1930’s.

Urge to kill…rising…

Actor Jason Patric’s maternal grandfather is Jackie Gleason.

this one is fairly well known, but Rip Torn is Sissy Sacek’s cousin.

Not a relationship, but it is a name thing. The actor Stewart Granger’s born name was James Stewart. That one was already taken(huh!) so he came up with another.

An earlier thread on this subject. Take special not of the OP.

Both rumors are true, according to the man himself. The former is the reason he changed his name and the latter the reason for which name he picked.

And his father was Jason Miller–Father Damien Karras in The Exorcist.

Oh chill. Sorry I didn’t see YOUR thread, but thanks for posting it.
