Why "Mother" Nature?

All right y’all. I did a search in the archives and I did a search in SEARCH and found nothing even remotely close to my question of why we refer to Nature as “she”. (Although given the intelligence of this group, I was surprised that I didn’t, and that’s a compliment by the way)

Q

This doesn’t actually answer the question, but it’s a very old tradition. From classical times, you see the earth associated with a woman and time with a man. e.g. the Greek Rhea and Kronos. I’d bet the earth-woman connection comes from the way the land yields food, the way a woman yields offspring.

Bottom is because females give birth, not males, as Greg Charles alluded to.
