Why Multiple Listings For Same Product On Amazon?

Why is there multiple listings, sometimes in the dozens, for the same exact product (same publisher, same edition, etc.) on Amazon? Typically only one or two listings will have the cover art or photo of the goods.

Shipped from different sellers.

I don’t mean multiple seller listings in one Amazon listing, which is ideal, but multiple Amazon listings. Or maybe there’s another term for “Amazon listing”.

If the extra listings are all by marketplace sellers rather than Amazon.com, then it is the sellers screwing it up, basically - Amazon.com allows featured sellers to add products to the catalog, and if they mess it up or their system doesn’t quite have the data right they create new listings for existing products. Sometimes it also is just that there really are two slightly different products - third party sellers are more likely to have old editions/different covers that might make buyers mad if listed on the main amazon page.
