Why no Gay Bashing this time?

Yes, idiotic. That darn Continental Congress and its idiotic demands for representation. That darn Martin Luther King and his idiotic demands for civil rights. So how does it feel to be on the same side of history as George III and Orval Faubus and Bull Connor? Because I guarantee you that in 30 years, the whole concept of homophobia and treating gays as second-class citizens is going to be seen in exactly the same way that deploying the National Guard to block schoolhouse doors and turning dogs and fire hoses on African-Americans marching on Selma are seen today.

Florida has finally caught up to the gay-bashing bandwagon four years late.

And you, of course, are they only one who gets to decide what your rights are. The rest of us have no say in that whatsoever. Once you’ve proclaimed something to be a “right,” then all discussion is supposed to end.

On the off chance that I might care when I’m 77, where would I take my guarantee in the event I wanted to claim the indemnity?

And 30 or 60 or 90 years after that, our culture will be displaced by some other culture which was not so foolish as to deconstruct one its most important and basic social institutions for fear of seeming prejudiced.

God damn it, do you people care absolutely nothing about the long term consequences of your loathsome ideology?

Why, no suh. You can jes’ tell me what ta do, suh, and I be sure an’ obey, suh, ‘cause you are the fount of mah rights, suh. Would massah wan’ a julep, suh?

There are Supreme Court cases that state that marriage is a fundamental right. Loving v. Virginia, for one. Fundamental right. But wait, you say! You DO have the fundamental right to marry…a woman! Hahahaha, gotcha there, faggot!

Loathesome ideology?! YOU have the fucking BALLS to talk to me about a loathesome ideology?! What is “loathesome” about our “ideology”, pray tell? I mean, to normal people who aren’t tainted by an irrational hatred of people who are different from them?

Pay attention to the script; that’s his line, not yours.

I gather you have no interest in keeping the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments around, then, with their inconvenient expectation that we treat others equally?

I call it a loathsome ideology because it is destroying Western civilization. Society doesn’t exist merely to protect your self-proclaimed “rights,” asshole.

I don’t see how any rational reading of the Constitution could find a right to same-sex marriage. Certainly the men who wrote that cocument never intended any such thing – or don’t you consider it just a little bit strange that the Constitution contained a provision mandating same-sex marriage that nobody saw for more than 200 years?

Gay rights is destroying western civilization?
Gosh.

Huckabee voter, I’m guessing. What do you expect?

On the other hand, I had no idea I had that kind of power…too bad it’s only true in minds diseased by conservatism.

Don’t you consider it just a little bit strange that the Constitution contained a provision outlawing slavery that nobody saw for more than 70 years? Don’t you consider it just a little bit strange that the Constitution contained a provision allowing female suffrage that nobody saw for more than 130 years?

Geesh…have you approved of fire yet? Or is that still on the table at the Conservative Club board meetings? Things change. We can change with them or we can get run over flat. Your choice.

Interesting as well that it’s always someone who basically HAS all of his rights already who’s always trying to tell those of us who don’t to shut up and stop destroying Western Civilization. Was MLK destroying Western civilization in the 50s and 60s? Because African-Americans having their rights isn’t exactly something that Western civilization has been all about for the last 1000 years or anything. Were the suffragettes destroying Western civilization? Because women having equal rights isn’t exactly what Western civilization has been about for the last 1000 years, either.

Why is it that the strongest-held arguments on your side end up looking like bigotry and irrational hatred when we stand them up against the historical arguments that are pretty much universally considered to be bigotry and irrational hatred, do you think?

I didn’t say Word One about persecution, any religion, or anything else. As to what I did post, I rest my case.

Well, to be fair, the Constitution didn’t contain those provision until somebody added them after the fact.

LonesomePolecat, I don’t think that anyone would endorse gay marriage at the cost of destroying Western civilization, and should it be that civilization could only be saved at the cost of picking on the gays, then you have an Omelas situation there, and let everyone reconcile that as best they can.

However, that being said, I don’t really see how allowing gay marriage would destroy our civilization. I’d like to hear your argument as to how it would. This is a serious request here…I’d really like to understand you.

You forgot two: Fear of socialism and fear of change. Of these 2, I’d say Fear of Change trumps all.
My neighbors and I got into a “friendly” argument re gay marriage when this was a hot topic. They insist that it is NOT marriage; that marriage can only occur between a man and a woman. I don’t agree with that at all, but obviously, their MMV.

Even given that, though–as tenuous and twisted as that is–it still does NOT explain how allowing 2 women or 2 men to marry one another “destroys” Western civilization. How does it undermine the family?
Perhaps it is because they cannot procreate? But then what of all those non-fertile couples who lovingly adopt children, even children of other races and cultures into their homes? They’re a family. No one gives them a second thought. (ok, some do, but not enough to legislate against them).
Perhaps it is because they --well, I’m dry. I got nothing.

I got nothing because there is nothing. If your panties are all in a twist because you’re worried WWJD and all that–make it a civil marriage, like so many heterosexual ones are. Then your God (who is GOD, we know, we know) won’t have to be concerned about this un-natural and debasing act, and your “faith” can keep on passing bigotry and prejudice to the next generations, just as Jesus taught you all to do. It’s stuff like this that made me an agnostic. The hypocrisy of Christians literally makes me sick to my stomach.

These arguments remind of all the arguments against women entering the workforce and getting their own credit cards etc. They are neither rational or logical or well thought out.
I’d like to see a couple of things in my lifetime. I’d like to see Americans actually doing something about pollution and emissions. I’d like to see universal health coverage in this country. I’d like to see choice remain a viable and practical option and I’d like to see gay marriage accepted. I’m 45. I’ve got about 40 more years (my family is long lived). We’ve got a long way to go…

According to Robert Bork, its us dirty fucking hippies who destroyed West Civ, and I’m damned if I’ll let the gays take that away!

Elaborate please.

He didn’t proclaim something to be a right. Marriage as a fundamental right is pretty much a given in society, to the extent that even slaves were oftentimes allowed to marry.

All he and “his kind” are doing is pushing for the extension of a right long granted to most, yet denied others, as different groups have since the dawn of democracy.
Perhaps since the dawn of civilization.

I imagine “his people” (what, is gay the new Jewish or something?) care quite deeply about the long-term consequences of their “loathsome ideology”. The question is, why do you?

Do you know something we don’t? Will we be too busy watching Queer Eye to repel the Chinese when they invade? Are you just talking about the class, perhaps? Frankly, I hated Western Civ, especially part 2, because the textbooks were effing huge…
