Vertical stripes are common on long sleeve and short-sleeve button down shirts. However, I never see them on short-sleeve “polo”-type shirts. (Collared with 1, 2 or 3 buttons down to the chest).
To clarify, I’m talking about strictly vertical stripes. Obviously checker-type designs include vertical stripes, but I’m not talking about them.
A quick Google image search shows plenty of polo shirts with some vertical stripes, but I agree that I rarely see them.
Probably because nobody really wants to look like this guy.
In the mid to late 80s, they were ubiquitous. IIRC, they were predominantly a Polo/Lauren style, but, of course, others followed/copied. Of course, the stripes were several times larger than the pic linked above.
I assume you meant smaller? How much larger could stripes be?
I have a polo shirt with vertical stripes. It’s funny looking. I never wear it.
Maybe about this large. Any larger and you only have room for two colors and that’s just a sorta weird duotone shirt.
For some reason all these striped shirts make me think of carhop uniforms from drive-in restaurants. The look seems a bit dated. Maybe it’s time for a fashion comeback?
