Why not have Russia in NATO & EU?

I’m not saying it was one sided. But what I am saying is that Sakashviili’s quick attempt to lobby the US and public relations into defending them was not really supported by fact. It’s kind of like when you have two little kids in the back, fighting over “my side”, and one pokes the other, and the other one slaps him in the face, and then the first screams “Mom! He HIT me!”. That’s pretty much what happened

I watch Russian news channels on a regular basis, the Cold War may be officially over but you wouldn’t think so if you follow their media.

The Russians generally are incredibly patriotic, incredibly nationalistic, and are not averse to projecting their power in any means possible, so long as they can get away with it, to strengthen their control in the world.

Corruption is rife throughout business and politics in Russia.

In that country Might truly does mean Right.(In both senses of the word.)

As far as I can tell, Russia still thinks of itself as a world power equal to the US. How much of this they actually believe, as opposed to how much is just for propaganda purposes, is hard to figure out though. Either way, it would never join an alliance unless it was clearly the dominate power of it, in the same way the US is clearly the dominate power in any military treaty it’s in, like NATO or ANZUS.

Which also goes a long way towards explaining Russians attitude towards Georgia, Ukraine, etc. Russia views it as US interference and reacts about as well as the US would if Russia tried bringing Mexico into a treaty and arming it.

Really, a lot of problems with the western/Russian relationship is that we tend to view and treat Russia as a has-been while Russia views itself and tries to act like it’s still a global power.
