I’m afraid that you misunderstand the true mission of the Straight Dope. The “fighting ignorance” has, since 1973, been tossed aside frequently in favor of a snarky crack or bad joke, and half-assed translations are two-fers. This site attracts wiseasses, but following Cecil for as much as forty years has made wiseasses of many of us who only tended that way before we discovered him.

I see. So you’re saying that the site has ended up converting the wiseass-curious?

Site? I was reading The Straight Dope in the newspaper ages before Al Gore created the innertubes. But this board is like San Francisco’s Castro Street: a place where wiseasses can be ourselves.
