There are predators like that in every country. It’s just in a place like Somalia, they can more easily get away with their predation. Or do you think that there aren’t people in places like America who will cheerfully divert relief funds to their own pockets if they can get away with it? Corruption in Western charities is hardly unknown.
The pirates exit because of the nonfunctional government and the lack of alternatives. Eliminating even more alternatives is hardly going to hurt piracy; just encourage it.

There are always those old standbys like basic human decency and compassion. Not that that excuses every flaw in international aid programs, but it’s not a trivial reason.

Not all Somalis are pirates.
Of course not. Are they actually getting the help though? If there are actually shipments that get through then it seems reasonable to continue sending aid. If almost all the aid food is being hijacked it’s reasonable to consider stopping shipments. I don’t know one way or the other in this case.
At this point I simply cannot envision Somalia ever having any kind of stability and order unless some more powerful country forcibly occupies it. But without an incentive to do so - like some type of valuable resource - this will never happen. Thus, I can’t foresee any good outcome for Somalia. I think it will probably be a lawless and dangerous place forever.

Funny thing about that: people don’t need encouragement to breed. Put some people together and they’ll start doing it on their own. And when they’re impoverished and struggling, they tend to have more children and not fewer. But it’s becoming clear that nothing would actually convince you to donate. I don’t think that was really the point of this thread.
I wonder how many Danish folks are donating…aren’t the Somalis still holding that Dane family (with kids) hostage after hijacking their sailboat?
“The Somalis” aren’t doing anything; there’s a disunited mass of people who go by that name.
But I see Marley23 was right and this isn’t about donations. It’s a bash-the Somalis thread. Why didn’t you just make a thread in the Pit?

Another things is that the pirates are particularly murderous. They’re thieves looking to loot and there’s no profit in killing people.
The total death toll due to Somali pirates is put at sixty-two (not counting the pirates themselves). This includes people who died of heart attacks or drowned during pirate attacks, people who committed suicide while being held hostage, and hostages who were killed during rescue attempts.
This doesn’t excuse the pirates from the crimes they do commit. They are stealing boats and cargoes and they’ve abducted hundreds of people. But even people sailing a ship through pirate infested waters on a regular basis have an extremely low chance of being killed by a pirate.

Not just Samalis. Rappers too can die and he won’t shed a tear.

Well, until some random schmoe digs up an oil geiser like in the cartoons, or maybe a vein of uranium. Then we’ll be so very, very concerned about the plight of these poor Somali, and wouldn’t they be better off with some of that democracy ?!
One possible future for Somalia: a major military power sets up an academy there to, essentially, train mercenaries. Somalia obviously has lots of young men who possess the nerve and the talent to engage in risky ocean hijackings - why not put these men to use by giving them legitimate military training and then sending them to fight as private soldiers in conflicts elsewhere? Could this be one way to put the manpower in Somalia to use?
