Why shouldn't I start a car in 2nd gear?

I am tired of shifting from first to second gear. I notice that I can get the car going from a complete stop in second gear with very little problem. What problems could I create by always starting my car out in second gear?

Your clutch might wear out earlier. But, it’s your clutch, so do what you will with it.

The plates in a clutch slip against one another when you let the clutch out. With the car in second gear it is harder for the car to start moving itself. This means the clutch pads wear against each other harder and longer than they would if you started the car in first gear.

While you can do this now and again without too much worry you are wearing out your clutch faster than need be each time you do it. Do it often enough and you’ll be in the shop for your transmission much faster than you might otherwise.

It will still wear on your clutch, but as an option try starting in first and shifting to third. Or second to fourth. Or get an automatic transmission and avoid all the nuisance altogether. :stuck_out_tongue:

If the car accelerates easily from 2nd, and you notice that you don’t use the clutch much differently than if you accelerated in first, then start in second.

You’ll find the clutch lasts longer because you eliminated a shift all-together: the 1 to 2 shift is one less application of the clutch.

 Are you insanse! This is never an option!

I had a friend that did that, I can’t vouch for the wear and tear on the vehicle, but it was awfully hard on the passengers, since it would give a big luuuurch as the clutch engaged, we almost slammed against the dash.

Unless I’m at a complete stop waiting to go uphill, I never start in first gear - old habit from learning to drive on my first set of wheels, which didn’t have synchro-mesh in 1st and Reverse*. I’ve put 90,000 miles on my Audi doing it that way, all the while living in San Francisco, and have not had to replace the clutch.
