Why so few new Christmas albums this year?

Last year there were half a dozen or more. This year we have compilation Christmas albums from RuPaul and Pentatonix. Cher has a new one out (her Santa Baby is very good), and Brandy has one coming out on November 10th.

Has streaming services and the changing music market put the kibosh on new albums for the holidays?

Everyone finally realized they don’t have a unique take on “Jingle Bells”?

That’s my take. Do we really need any more Christmas albums? Unless someone is writing original Christmas songs (see the “Love The Holidays” album* by Old 97s as an example) I’d say all the old standards have been done to death.

* One of the songs from the album was featured in last year’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special”

Compared to “half a dozen” last year?

It’s not even Halloween yet and you’re already a third of the way to last year’s mark. There’s still plenty of time between now and, say, Thanksgiving.

I’m pretty sure I have every Christmas song I’ll need for the rest of my life. (no it’s not zero, smarty pants! )

To me, all these new songs are just, well, wrong! We have good and proper Christmas songs. Anything new is just money grabbing.

My favorite modern new Christmas song to come out in the last decade.

Well, that half dozen remark was for albums that came out in mid-October. There are bound to be some late stragglers, but this is normally the season for releasing Christmas albums.
