Why so little sex in mainstream movies?

Blame it on the MPAA. It is so skewered towards violence over sex it is ridiculous. There are G-rated movies that are hyperviolent. But expose a woman’s nipple and the movie gets rated R. Any ‘sex’ scenes there are have to be unmarried people or graphic rape. If the MPAA is skewered towards sex as they are with violence, then a Max Stiener movie would be rated G. Yes it’s that bad.

You will be happy to know that in Quebec, which has its own rating system, American Beauty was rated G.

But matt, is the Quebec ‘g’ equivalent to the American ‘g’? I was under the assumption that while the Canadians took the European view on sex, they also take the European view on violence (except, of course, when it comes to hockey :o) )

Speaking of MPAA, and since this is the Pit, I think I’ll say a little something about them. I was just looking at the MPAA’s site and I am so glad. I’m glad that the MPAA was formed because, at least from what their web page, they are an organization meant to promote American movies overseas and help the American vision be seen world wide. How else would American movies survive?
Holy fucking shit, if I was ever forced to swallow more bull shit I would have my stomach pumped. Though I didn’t, for a second, swallow any of it. Maybe, though I highly doubt it, the MPAA was formed only to promote American movies in other countries in 1945. But now it does just the opposite! It cuts up films, destroying the filmmakers original intent. Thus the vision of the American is completely destroyed and what is show in other countries is more bull shit! More of their bull shit!
Now, many of you are probably thinking that the MPAA protects the children. That’s more of the same that they hand out in their press releases. Now, I admit, I’m here in Canada. However, unless there thousands of people protesting up here, our movie bureau follows the MPAA like obedient little lap-dogs! We got the crappy Eyes Wide Shut up here too. They don’t consider us a separate market so we basically get was the MPAA decides. This is what really pisses me off the most.
The MPAA, however protective of children they may be, has still failed in many regards. They have not formed another rating above “R” but not NC-17. NC-17 is a death warrant for most films. NC-17 used to mean that is was for adult audiences only. Now pretty much all papers won’t carry NC-17 movies because it’s associated with porn, which it is not. The almighty MPAA can give a film an NC-17 rating just for content, if they see fit. Eyes Wide Shut was a great movie on its merits if you look beyond the sex to the symbolism. Now, I’m not a Kubrick nut, but since we have an “A” (Adult) rating, I think I should have gotten to see what Kubrick intended. Fuckin MPAA!
Whew! Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Later all.
