I was browsing through this page, and I started to wonder…why are there so many “styles” of reticles in rifle scopes? Do some styles offer some sort of technical superiority over others, or does it all just come down to infividual preference?
It lists several reasons right on the page you linked to. Some are better for low light, some are finer for target shooting, some have range estimating features built in, etc.
Hobbyist hardware tends to get complicated over time. While the manufactures may claim the vast array of choices is due to “technical differences,” the real reason is marketing. To gain a competitive edge a manufacturer will change something (anything), and convince potential customers the change increases performance. This phenomenon occurs in just about every hobby, past-time and sport (e.g. golf, photography, microbrews, automobiles).
