Why the demonization of Obama?

I say I would like to see some evidence that it is true.

I mean, sure, we have already established that the Democrats did try to float this (contradicting the assertion that they only used it as blackmail). But it never got anywhere, because (presumably) there was nothing to it besides innuendo.

So the flow seems to be [ul][li]It starts to become clear that Clinton has serious zipper issues.[]Various Democrats become aware that these rumors are quite true and implement damage control.[]Part of this damage control is that they cast around for a tu quoque to use as a distraction (or blackmail).[]They find a long-term associate of Bush’s and begin spreading rumors.[]The whole thing falls flat with an audible thud. Nobody who ever interacted with Bush believes it for a split second, and the best that the press can come up with a an article in a semi-humorous magazine which not even the Democratic National Convention can do anything with. [/li][quote]
In March 1992, the rumors came up during an episode of The McLaughlin Group. Panelists Fred Barnes and Jack Germond were in rare agreement when they said the Washington press had looked into them and found nothing substantial.

[li]Bush loses the election.[*]Years later, the Usual Suspects return to the rumor like a dog to its vomit[/ul]The Democrats tried a smear, and it didn’t work. Sure, it convinced people like Der Trihs, but how hard is that? [/li]

It was an open secret. My dad was career State Department (he actually drove HW around for a few days when he was Veep), my mom was a political reporter in Washington while Bush was Veep. I heard all the skinny. Everybody knew about Jennifer Fitzgerald. You can call it “gossip” if you want, but it was more than that. The Secret Service had to bail him out of a couple of sticky situations when he was V.P., and Bush’s zipper problems (which preceded his Presidency), were reputedly one of the reasons that the Reagans didn’t like him very much.

Personally, I kind of liked HW and my dad said he was a very decent and courteous guy while he was ferrying him around Brasilia. His affairs don’t mean anything to me, but they happened.

If the dress has no stain,
From gossip you must refrain.

Funny - the whole Washington press corp can’t find jack shit, but the alleged son of some one who allegedly drove Bush around for a couple of alleged days can vouch for it, and we are supposed to believe it.

What, did you read about it in the National Enquirer?

I see. So one time when your dad was driving HW around, HW was all talking about this chubby side action he as getting because Babs wouldn’t take out her dentures anymore, and hey lets stop here at this apartment, and keep the motor running cuz this won’t take much more than 10-15 minutes. wink. wink.

Because failing that, it’s still just a rumor being spread by some anonymous guy on the internet (you) who heard it second hand from his parents who heard it second hand from others.

Damn. Beaten to the punch.

I guess it was rather obvious, though. :stuck_out_tongue:

Here’s an example: Obama’s campaign just announced plans to move his August 28 nomination-acceptance speech to the Denver Bronco’s INVESCO Field, because it holds 75,000 people; the venue previously planned, the Pepsi Center, only seats 19,000.

Based on that alone, the FReepers are comparing him to Hitler. Not making this up.

My whole comment about Gennifer Flowers had nothing to do with Bush v Clinton and who was more moral etc. Bush had an affair? So what? My point was that having a picture with Donna Rice on his lap killed Gary Hart’s presidential run in 1988. Four years later, a similar incident happens to Bill Clinton (albeit with a tape and not a photo) and we all know the result.

As for MonicaGate, despite your belief in whether or not he should have been impeached, was the issue perjury or a blowjob, etc. The fact remains that Clinton lied to the American people and tried to cover it up. As soon as he was acquitted, he got on national TV and admitted he lied. Where was the outrage?

Right now Clinton is doing Belinda Stronach, a Canadian MP. Oh there is no proof but it is pretty well accepted as fact (and in politics, rumors and fact may as well be the same). No outrage. In fact, people are joking about it that if HRC won the Presidency and Stronach the Speakership, Slick Willie could be hooking up with TWO world leaders. The followup joke was that he would only be busy in Ottawa.

Again, this is NOT a Clinton/Bush I debate. It is an acknowledgement that there are some politicians that for whatever reason, scandal that would destroy other politicians don’t affect them at all. Obama is like that. If news came out tomorrow that Obama once ate a roasted baby in a Satanist ceremony the results would be:

  1. A total of 5 anti-Obama posts from Republicans on the Dope and 213 posts pointing out that Bush II’s Iraqi war has killed more babies than Obama ever has.
  2. A universal denounciation of the Republicans as assholes for scandalizing a candidate’s eating habits
  3. Obama successfully distancing himself a la the Wright affair
  4. His cult convienently ignoring the roasted baby “incident” because Obama has a vision

It’s bullshit that the press couldn’t find anything. They knew all about it. Bush just cowed them from reporting on it. Obviously, they didn’t have any video of it or anything, but it was no secret in Washington, blieve me. If you guess want to believe that Bush was as pure as the driven snow, I’m not going to convince you, but I can say that the scuttlebutt from inside circles that HW liked getting some strange was going around before he was even President and long before anyone knew who Bill Clinton was.

The mainstream media outlets never report everything they know, only what they can prove. There was an awful lot of smoke around the rumors of Bush’s dalliances. Sure, he might not have been banging Jennifer Fitzgerald in all those hotel rooms, but he was definitely in those rooms with her.

Wow. Anonymous posters on a right-wing, partisan message board exaggerate stuff!!! I think I see a turnip truck in the distance, BG. If you run fast enough, you might be able to catch up.

Because he lied about a blowjob. Something that was none of my damned business to begin with. As far as I’m concerned, we all have a god-given right to lie about our sex lives to anyone who isn’t our spouse and is rude enough to ask. Clearly, YMMV.

Ditto. A lie is only as important as what’s being lied about. Lying about a blow job is of no consequence to anyone. I’m much more concerned about a President lying to start a war.

Just my point. Most other politicians RIGHTFULLY OR WRONGFULLY would be ruined by having an affair then lying about it but with Good O’ Bill, it’s rationalized. With someone else like Larry Craig and consentual gay sex, his career is over.

The only place I’ve seen anything deifying Obama is on the right. Jonah Goldberg, then Cal Thomas made references to Obama as the Messiah, and now John Mace says he sees Obama deified.

Last I checked, Larry Craig was still a United States Senator. Incidentally, all the calls for his resignation have come from his own party, not from the left.

I’m not “rationalizing” because it’s Bill Clinton. I don’t give a shit about Larry Craig’s sex life either. Or anyone else’s.

Larry Craig is still a senator, and mainly it was his own party calling for his resignation.

Also note he did something quite illegal: he solicited anonymous gay sex in a public restroom.

If he were merely openly gay no one would care, except of course that he could never be elected in Idaho.

It’s rationalizing because it wasn’t about Clinton’s sex life, it was about his pattern of sexually harrassing subordinate women.

Or does that fall under ‘none of our business’?

I understand a brilliant young film director has been engaged to make a documentary of the event tentatively titled “Triumph of the Hope”

Cite for such a pattern ever having been proven to exist? Cite for a single proven example of Bill Clinton sexually harrassing a subordinate?
