Why, The Goldbergs?

BTW, The AV Club used to have recaps/reviews of the episodes (although I don’t think they’re covering the show this season) and the real Adam F Goldberg participated in the comments section, replying to others and explaining stuff.

One of my favorites and I think it deserves some recognition. I enjoy the 80s stuff and I don’t care about the unreliable narration. I think it’s funny that he mentions the “other Adam Goldberg.” Hayley Orrantia is very talented and Troy Gentile as Barry kills me every time.

BTW, another thing. One of the minor recurring characters is a student-athlete at Adam’s school named Ruben Amaro Jr (and he’s always identified by his full name). He’s based on a real person named Ruben Amaro Jr.

I was a teen in the 80’s.

I don’t remember the preppy girls having big hair. That was a style reserved for the girls that were into heavy metal glam bands.

I also remember neon colors being all the rage for the preppy girls.

Love this show. I was in high school during early 80s and I totally connect with it.

I love the fact that it’s Adam’s recollection, and the real life video clips at the end.

Yeah, it’s just inevitable that when I write my historical novel about the Civil War, I’m going to have characters saying “LOL” and “fa shizzle.”

Wow, you must be really old if you were alive for the Civil War. Because that’s what we’re talking about in the case of this sitcom; people who are writing about things they remember.

I miss that. I’m surprised that AVClub dropped Goldbergs (as well as Blackish) from their review schedule, especially since Adam was involved in the comments like he was.

Budget issues. They couldn’t keep paying for all those reviews each week, so they only kept the ones with that got the most clicks.

No yeah, I get that and it’s unfortunate. Goldbergs has the creator in on the commenting and Blackish has had some incredible episodes (plus Tracee Ellis Ross in some awesome t-shirts  and they both lost some support with the AVClub having to drop them. I suppose they’re being reviewed elsewhere but AVClub (imo) has some cachet to their reviews; it’s really the only site that I go to for TV reviews.

One minor detail I enjoy is the close relationship between Adam and his grandfather.

Just repeat to yourself, “It’s just a show. I should really just relax.”

By the late 80’s early 90’s nearly every girl had the big poofy hair going on. Sometimes it was just bangs teased out, sometimes everything was teased and curled and fluffed to the max. Check out an early 90’s yearbook sometime.

The Goldbergs, Speechless, and Black-ish are appointment viewing every week.

I love this. “OMG! A sitcom based on an unreliable narrator isn’t portraying the 80s EXACTLY AS IT HAPPENED!!!1!!”

Do you freak out over A Christmas Story, too?
