Great show with awesome actors …as a child of the eighties, I feel they captured it perfectly. My favorite part is the ending when they often show photons or videos that inspired the episode.
I tend not to watch network sitcoms until they’ve become popular enough to hit syndication. And even then, not.
I have not seen this show but I remember finding the promos intriguing and I do like Jeff Garlin and the 80s. I look forward to daily 2 hour blocks of this on TBS in another few years.
Yes, I watch it. It’s pretty funny, and the short videos at the end showing the creator’s family doing whatever is shown in the episode are great. (I just hope those clips are real and not faked for the show. And what happens when the creator runs out of home videos?)
I started watching this halfway through last season, caught up, and watched the new one last night. I think the actors are great, especially the kids. And the bits at the end are really neat to see.
I read an article about the anachronisms - like how they will put a piece of music in the show that wasn’t even out at the time of the movie they were talking about in the same scene - and the article said that the creators know and they don’t care. I guess you are to believe that the narrator has a faulty memory of when things happened, and the creators are doing more of a “ouvure of the 80s” as opposed to a historical representation.
I was a bit annoyed by the sloppiness until I read that, and now I just enjoy it for what it is.
(Bolding mine)
I’ve been watching The Goldbergs, and very much enjoying it. They re-capture that Eighties feel so well, you almost think it could have aired then. And man, is that a strong cast, particularly Wendi McLendon-Covey. She is so good in that role that I’m having a hard time remembering her as Clementine Johnson, and she was so awesome as Clementine Johnson.
I would bet a good bit of money that it’s real footage from yesteryear. I can’t think of a good reason to fake that, though that’s not to say there are no good reasons, and it’s convinced me. Considering that fictionalized young Adam is depicted as a movie-buff with a real zeal for film and film-making, I figure there’s gonna be no shortage from the actual grown-up Goldberg’s video archive. Assuming there is at least some truth behind young Adam’s fictionalization, of course.
Every episode takes place in “Nineteen Eighty-Something.” The explicit ambiguity is a great way to avoid anachronisms and problems like That 70’s Show had where they had to stretch out later years.
I love love love this show. Even without the loving nostalgia it’s hilarious. The family members are all funny and endearing. It sucks that I can’t watch the new season premier quite yet.
I caught the first few episodes last week on a plane. It’s probably not something I’ll follow, but it definitely made me laugh. The older boy is especially hilarious. Wait, I guess I forgot the mom. And the dad. Yeah, all of the characters are pretty funny.
I heart The Goldbergs.
I watched the first season and thought it was pretty good (I graduated from high school in 1986.) The only thing that bothers me is the often obviously messed up timeline. I understand they do it so they can cram as much 80’s stuff into the show as possible, but some episodes can be pretty closely dated and end up with anachronisms.
It’s on between two shows I like that I try to catch live when I can. That’s about all the feelings I can muster for The Goldberg’s.
Caught my first exposure last week, got ten minutes into it and decided it’d be more fun to scrub the toilet. Can’t stand the mother, can’t stand either brother (there’s two, right?), hate Jeff Garlin (thought he was the weakest part of Curb Your Enthusiasm), but I enjoyed seeing George Segal. I also really enjoyed the final video clip on which the episode was based - that was cool.
With the enthusiasm shown here, maybe I should give it another chance, although I do have a second toilet in the house just in case.
I watch it and I usually hate everything on the networks now
not great but good enough to keep me watching
it’s cool because they have vhs tapes
Murray is my favorite TV dad since Al Bundy. Disinterested, lazy, agitated, and often befuddled - the removal of pants after work is just icing on the cake.
To me it’s kind of like “The Neighbors” from a couple years back. I thought it was going to be stupid but caught an episode a couple of times in between The Middle and Modern Family, and was surprised that not only did it not suck, it was actually pretty funny. It’s not must-see, but I’ll watch it if it’s on.
Love the Goldbergs and love their treatment of the era. I graduated high school in 89 so I saw Tron and the Star Wars movies and my friend had the USS Flagg aircraft carrier so all that resonates with my nerdy nostalgia. My kids really like it despite not having much of a connection to that decade; I think they connect with Adam.
I did read somewhere that the videos at the end are legit from when Adam was growing up. He must have a ton of footage.
Running reruns over the summer was great idea, because that is where I caught quite a few episodes.
I like it. The (s)mother is a BIT over the top, but if you view it from the “faulty memory” angle it works. And the da who “won’t bail you out” (but does) was good.
Bit at the end is neat

I think it’s a great show and I very much enjoyed the first season. The first episode of the second season was definitely keeping up the standard and I’m glad they didn’t change the show. Loved the David Spade character.
“I’m at the kid’s table at the last supper?”
I thought Erica was a better skater

I didn’t like last nights episode that much but it was amusing enough. The footage of the real kid singing at the end was a highlight.
Probably the best sitcom currently airing. I agree about liking the real footage they usually show at the end, a very cool touch.
