Why the hostility towards states that want to secede?

Stopping what? Hey, I’m all for devolving power to the states, but there is no serious effort in any state to secede. Lots of bluster, and maybe some of it is Texas-sazed, but no state is going to secede.

I’m not a citizen of my state, I’m a citizen of the US. This was established in the landmark court case of North vs. South and reinforced in the 14th amendment:

My state doesn’t have the right to deprive me of the protection of the laws of the government just because I happen to live here, even if 51% of my neighbors want to secede.

So you propose that anyone that leaves the country for political reasons forfeit the land/property that they had previously purchased?

No, it stays in their possession. They just can’t declare it not part of the united States.

those petitions do not have any verification or tracking. as in anyone, from any place, with multiple email accounts can sign them (many many times each, if they want). pretending they have any validity at all is…well. pretending.

it’s a pretty embarrassing display of sore losery.

they didn’t file these before they voted because they don’t, on whole, have a beef with america. they filed them once they had results they don’t want to accept, which is just another way of saying they hate democracy and want tyranny. which, let’s face it–most republcans do. they want, more than anything, a christian king to rule them in a theocracy (just so long as it’s a flavor of christianity they agree with).
so basically it’s “i’ll play! this is fun!–until i start to lose, then i’m taking my ball and going home.”

it’s funny how quickly they forget the Rep primaries…back then it was every candidate talking about how terrible the other guy was. if that was their equivalent national election for president, the faction of butthurt Romnivores would want to secede from the Newt-tonias and so and so forth in perpetuity until everyone lived in Theirownhousistan.

it’s a straight retarded method of handling democracy.

good god. we survived 12 years bush(es). how bad can four more years really be?

do you have a cite for anyone threatening violence against peaceful seceders?

if that’s what these petitioners really wanted, why aren’t they petitioning for that? why didn’t they petition for seceding before the election?

And your post was a pretty embarrassing display of grammar.

Do any of you against secession (essentially everyone in this thread) not see the irony? What would be the difference between a state like Texas seeking independence from a bloated government (in this case, the US FedGov) and the colonies seeking freedom from the oppressive British government? It just saddens me to see that so few give a single fuck about social or economic freedom anymore.

It doesn’t have to come down to that, for the same reason parental insistence that the kid eat his broccoli before getting any ice cream doesn’t have to come down to a plate of broccoli hurled against the wall.

As has been repeatedly explained on this thread, butthurt over an election not coming out the way you like (after you have been given a fair opportunity to vote in said election) is not comparable to a legitimate political complaint about taxation without representation.

Maybe DC can make a legitimate case for secession, but these Wendy Whiners cannot.

I don’t think anyone is saying that the British government was wrong for fighting to keep the colonies. They just lost.

And you didn’t respond to my post: why should my neighbors be allowed to vote away my citizenship in the U.S? Should they be able to vote away my right to free speech?

So long as Texas gets to send Representatives and Senators to Washington, and so long as they get to vote for President, your comparison is utterly spurious. The Revolution took place because the Colonies were not allowed to take part in the British political process; that was the source of its legitimacy.

I didn’t care whether Obama or Romney won. Both support wars. Both support corporate and social welfare (Romney being the grandfather of Obamacare and all). Both support NDAA. Neither is willing to make the spending cuts necessary to fix this country. Both support the war on drugs. What the fuck is the difference between the two? Don’t make assumptions about me just because I would love a way out.

I’m a libertarian and the only legitimate voice I have in politics is about to retire.

Then you should probably work on convincing more people to become libertarians.

They can. It takes a supermajority, but they can. Everything in a democracy is up for a vote at some point.

Holy shit.

You JUST supported Britain’s imperialism, and you’re talking about rights?

I don’t know why I’m bothering, but here’s my opinion: it’s impossible to please everyone. And the majority certainly isn’t always right (see: gay rights, war on drugs, every president since Coolidge). But you currently have, essentially, ONE choice of government. You can break as many monocles as you want over my ideals, but my ideals would give you fifty choices as opposed to one.

Yes. And they would be absolutely stupid to do such a thing. And any state that voted away the right to free speech would pay dearly with a mass exodus. And one of the few things I would support in terms of a FedGov would be not allowing any state to force a person to stay.

Incorrect.

A small number of discontented sore losers in each of 50 states have filed those petitions. You need all of 25,000 signatures to make such a filing, and in a country as large as ours it’s not hard to find that number of spoiled, childish, tantrum-throwing morons. Their guy lost and now it’s not just a matter of them wanting to take their ball and go home, they want to smash and destroy.

It is especially ironic when those same idiots want to maintain US hegemony and imperialism want to destroy the very union that makes that possible. It is especially ironic when those who fear becoming more like Europe want to become more like Europe by fracturing into a continent full of little, conflicting nations.

It’s a ridiculous hissy-fit

I don’t have hostility towards the states, I have extreme annoyance to the stupid people who are more interested in posturing and whining than actually doing something to improve the world.

The Republicans lost. Get over it.

Thanks for reading the entire thread, in particular my own personal posts in this thead.

Or that they’re even Americans… I know several people from Europe who have claimed they have been able to sign those on-line petitions, no questions asked, so I seriously question if the people asking for this are even American.
